You guys around here are quite advanced using these devices. Im a smart guy that never used a scanner, but need one to monitor the area Fire Dept calls for my new career move.

Now is not the time to spend the large dollars, so any comments on the various desk based or portable devices around the $100 price point would be greatly appreciated.

Happy to find this place and look forward to feedback and particpating in return. Thanks all.

If you don't need digital or trunking capabilities, look up the specs for the Uniden BC355C base/mobile scanner. If it will work for you, they are easy enough to program. About $100 at ScannerMaster (free shipping) or Amazon.

And, unlike some $500 scanners you get a printed manual. And, I believe this manual was not translated to English in China as it is pretty easy to understand. LOL

If the fire department that you need to monitor is on a digital system, unfortunately, the answer is that there isn't a $100 scanner that can do what you want.

Can you tell us about which departments you need to monitor?

GRE® PSR-100 200-Channel Handheld Analog Scanner - RadioShack.com This happens to be a nice little handheld if the area you want to listen to is not digital.

If you live in the city, it's P-25 digital. State system is digital. Seems the county is analog conventional.

Right now, RS has a few around $100. Pro-404/405, Pro-163/164. The 404/405's don't have CTCSS/DCS, the 163/164's do. CTCSS/DCS helps by filtering out unwanted signals.
HTH,
