Hi all thought i would drop in and say hi to every one, I am new to this board and to scanning. What got me started is I bought Radioshack pro-2006 at the goodwill last week for $3.99 with no antenna but it still picks up Goose creek police and fire, I still have to go get a antenna for it and the back light doesnt work. We listen to it all the time, so the wife is insisting that I go out and buy a new scanner, she says that since I am a stay at home dad (by her choice) this could become my hobbie, but i dont know what to look for in a scanner, she gave me a limit of 200 to 300 hundred to spend on one. Plus should I get a outside antenna and what freq should I moniter. THANKS for any help :)

OK here is what you need.. It MUST have Trunking capabilty for Motorola Type II, as SCHP, Charleston County, Berkely County, Dorchester County, in fact all the counties surrounding you are on 800 MHz Trunked Systems. Not to mention that the state is on the Palmetto 800 Trunked System. The City of Charleston is on one also, but has plans to go digital ASAP.... Thus you may end up getting a digital capable scanner before too long.. Yes these are expensive, but are worth the $$$...

Your City also has Talk Groups on the Palmeto 800...

So you will do nicely to get a good trunk tracking scanner...

A good choice would be the Radio Shack PRO-97 Handheld, the PRO-2051 Base/Mobile... Another thing toi keep in mind is that you are now close to the Charleston AFB.. so getting a scanner with Military Aviation capability is also a plus...

You can get the RS ones easily at any of the Low Country Radio Shack Stores.... As for ten codes... the only non standard ones are City of Charleston PD... The use only the last half of the codes.. Example- 07 is 10-07.
