Newbie - Frequency / Trunking / Digital?

Hi!

How can I tell which frequencies are trunked and/or digital? Can that be determined by the actual frequency?

I bought the RS Police Call book, but don't see where each frequency tells whether it is trunked and/or digital?

Scanning is fun, but it can be confusing to a newbie like me!

Any advice on a FAQ for beginner questions such as this?

take my advice (and others on here) and ditch the police call book (i use it for my fireplace ). all the frequencies you need are on this sight... just go to your state on the RR Database.

I believe Police Call codes the listings so that you can tell if a frequency is trunked or not trunked (i.e., conventional). However, you cannot look at a frequency and determine if it is digital or analog. Listening to the frequency on the scanner will quickly tell you that. Or look up the system in question right here on this site in the RR database.

There may be business/ind Motorola trunking systems in your area that would not be listed in Police Call. Do a search from 851.025 thru 868.8975. In my area there are two [2] fire dept on business band and NEVER show up in Police Call or anything else. Make a note of sound. The Motorola controller sound like rapid fire machine gun. Digital is almost the same but for only a few seconds at a time. From this you can get an idea of whats going on in your area. Good Luck, Larry

I believe that Police Call does tell you when a particular freq. is
trunked.

Pick a freq. in the book. It will give NAME ,TRANSMITTER CITY,
and SERvice.
In the SER column, you will have descriptors such as :

C , F , L, M, P , R ,S, and
T

The T is for Trunked Public Safety.

I agree with the others ,utilize the RR Database ,it's the best !

And if they get information from folks that live there they even add this one:
T-D, or TRS-D. This is rare, but there are a couple of them listed in police call,.. and the trunking info in the rear usually will say if digital is used on a TRS... as for conventional digital,.. I have yet to see it listed in PC. So your much better off on this website.
