Ok, I think I may have been staring at this for too long, and have confused myself-- but I am looking at this:

http://www.radioreference.com/modules.php?name=RR&sid=1138

This lists the system type as : Motorola Type II SmartZone Omnilink--

I tried setting up a Motorola II group, but the listed frequencies are 'Out of Band'?

I'm obviously missing something here-- 001 South Zone 482.21250 482.76250 488.01250 488.08750 488.13750 488.21250 488.23750 488.26250* 488.28750*
488.98750*

I take it I should only have to enter the control channels (those with a * by them), but honestly can't figure out how to get started. I've read the manual a few times-- it does a good job of getting me to program the scanner (I've got oodles of conventional frequencites in there), but not a good job at distinguishing between types of systems-- I also checked the wiki, which explains how the different systems work, but not how to identify things for programming.

Can someone a) answer the specific "how do I program San Mateo" question, and b) point me to a resource that will help me "read" the frequency lists so I know what to do. I'm also interested in programming the Santa Clara city trunked frequencies. This is the sort of thing that I end up understanding after a couple of concrete examples; I apologize for the basic-ness of the question.

Thanks in advance.

I think I may have been staring at it too long-- APCO-25 appears to be the answer to my most basic question (what should I be programming). Please let me know if I am mistaken. Thanks.

Your are indeed mistaken. The answer is Motorola Type II UHF (to get "out of band" I suspect you set it as either 800, 900, or VHF).

FYI, you get "Motorola Type II" from the "System Type" line in the database. UHF comes from all the frequencies being in the 48x.xxx range.

Note that you'll also need to input the Base/Step/Offset from the table above the frequencies.

Thanks! That's exactly what I needed. I've become a near expert at getting stuff programmed into this thing, but far from one at reading the frequency charts.

For the systems frequency list, you need only the active control chnnels.......the system I monitor has only one, makes it simple :)
