Greetings all. I live in North Raleigh and I recently came into possession of an apparently old Uniden scanner. It's a Bearcat 200, a base scanner. I really have no idea how old it is, how to use it, or if it's even useful anymore, as I imagine most of the interesting radio traffic has transitioned to digital, and I'm assuming this thing is too old to pick it up. I'm going strictly on appearance with this judgement, the scanner is brown and has a '70s look about it. Here's a pic:

Anybody got any advice? Might this thing be good for some fun or should I just put it back on the shelf?

Welcome to Radioreference.com! Up till a couple months ago I used to live in Garner and believe it or not you can still monitor alot with that one scanner...you should be able to pick up Raleigh Police (my Raleigh PD info website is located HERE)...you will also be able to pick up the Raleigh Fire Dept (you can get a link to my Raleigh Fire Dept info website from the police site above) and you will be able to pick up Wake County Fire Dispatch (for the time being ) on 154.190Mhz...you should have 16 channels to play with so if it will receive NOAA weather on 162.550Mhz or 162.475Mhz it should receive the above frequencies...if you have any more questions feel free to email me at MSherard@gmail.com ...
Happy Monitoring!

Thanks for the info, Marshall.

I can indeed tune in the weather broadcast at 162.550, the other weather freq seems to be 162.450, not .475 though. They come in loud and clear. Do you by any chance have any idea where I might be able to dowload or find an instruction manual for this scanner? I really have no idea how to properly operated and program it.

No problem...could not find an owners manual online right off...but it should be pretty easy to program....Let's say you wanna program Raleigh Police Channel 1 Dispatch...the frequency is 460.150Mhz...just hit "Manual" and it should step through the 16 channels one by one until you see "1" for the 1st channel....press 4 6 0 . 1 5 0 then "enter". you should start to hear radio traffic on Raleigh PD Ch1....hit manual again and you can program another frequency into your scanners channel 2...hopefully this is making sense...if you have any more questions feel free to email me at MSherard@gmail.com

I don't think you'll find a "free" site where you can download a manual, but there are websites where you can order a photocopy or original manual for a fee.

You might want to request help on the alt.radio.scanner and / or rec.radio.scanner newgroups. Maybe someone will photocopy a manual for free for you. There might also be an appropriate forum on Radio Reference. Also, the Tarheelscanner, CarolinaScannin and Carolinascanner lists on Yahoogroups.

Make sure any responders don't confuse your request with the Uniden 200XLT, which is a newer handheld. I'm guessing your scanner dates back to about 1975 or 76.

I'm presuming you get to a particular memory channel by pressing ...
<manual> <xx> <manual> ("xx" represents the channel no.)

To enter a frequency in that memory channel, go to the memory channel, then enter the frequency, including the decimal point, then <enter>.

Try here - http://myweb.accessus.net/~090/bearcatting.html he has a bunch of older scanner manuals free for downloading, you just have to join his appropriate yahoo group. I don't see the exact manual you are looking for, but I didn't look that hard...
