Looking to purchase a scanner to listen to the FDNY, any advise on type/model to purchase. Would like to be able to listen to command channels, etc.

I recommend the Uniden 996P2

It's reasonably priced and has no reported issues.

For a handheld, I recommend the 325P2

Also very reliable.

Firecodeny531, I'm near you in Lower Westchester County, NY. I bought the Bearcat BCD-962P2 last August. Just a little bit of advise, it went up a lot on Amzon.com but is $349.00 at Bearcat Warehouse. They ship from Maryland, they also can program it for you ($70) (Firmware update included)and will ship it free and no sales tax either. Call Paul in Maryland at 877-568-7226 on Monday and also look at his YouTube video's.
You may also reach out to me too via private message. Like Doctordialtone mentioned, this is a PROBELM free base/mobile scanner and FDNY is in the 482 Mhz area now on narrow banding. They are no longer on VHF. This will do a great job, even with the supplied telescoping antenna.
