Hello all.

I just purchased a new PRO-97 scanner today. The instruction manual that came with this unit is less than impressive. I am looking into getting into the wonderful world of scanning but dont know where to start. I have a list of frequencies I would like to program, but I dont know or understand how the banks and channels work. Can anyone offer any programming advice to a newbie?

Thanks :)

Hi There,

First of all I would like to welcome you to Radio Reference. It is a great site. I know the manual for the PRO-97 is not the best but it is also helpful to just take an hour or so to read through it to understand how to program your new radio.

I would like to recommend that you purchase Don Starr's WIN97 application for your scanner. You will also need to purchase a programming cable as well.

The cost of the WIN97 program is around $25.00 (well worth it) and the cost of the cable is about $20.00 from Radio Shack.

I too own a PRO-97 and think it is a great little rig for general purpose and conventional trunk scanning.

The URL for the software is http://www.starrsoft.com

Hope this helps and once again welcome to the site!

yeah, thanks a lot for the advice. I played with it for a few hours last night and learned a few new things. Leaving in a few minutes to pick up that cable from the shack. Thanks :)

Someone has made a PRO-97 Quick Reference card. Go to the link below to check it out. You can print it out, fold it and carry it with you, which is what it was designed for. It's in .pdf format.
