Newbie question

I'm confused and apologize for asking this as I'm sure its somewhere in here. Too confused to know what to search for.

I'm monitoring in the Jackson, MS area on the 800mhz band using the Uniden xlt895 and pro-46. There is a beep tone that makes it almost impossible to hear both sides of the conversation. Following one side, there are 4 tones and I then loose the other side of the converstaion. Uniden tech told me we were on provoice but Radioreferece.com lists that provoice was scrapped.

It appears the system is Edacs Standard.

Anyway, will it be neceessary that I buy a newer scanner in order to monitor in my area? And will the Uniden 246T fit the bill by being able to eliminate these tones?

I'm not familiar with the area, but if it's truly EDACS, you'll need a scanner that can monitor EDACS systems. As far as I know the BC246T should be fine for that, although I don't have any EDACS systems nearby. If it's really Provoice, you can forget it, nothing will track that.

I believe the annoying bleeps and bloops after transmissions were put in to make it hard for people to scan the system.

There's no better place to get info like that then from users local to you; I'd jump onto the Miss. forum here at RadioReferece, and I'd also see about joining this Yahoo group...

Like the other poster said, ProVoice is unmonitorable; if you can understand what's being said (except on the freq that has got the control channel on it), then it's not ProVoice, and the new 246T will track it. The other newer Unidens that could handle it would include the 296, 796, 898T (which on the outside looks almost exactly like an 895) and a few others.

Stay away from the 780, 245, 250 and 785. While these models all handle EDACS, they will not be supported when the rebanding takes effect (and have since been discontinued anyway). 73s Mike

This is classical of an EDACS (non ProVoice) system scanning in FM Mode, which is what your two scanners listed above are doing.

The BC246 will "fit the bill" fine if the system is truly not ProVoice.

One more Edit:
If you want to monitor the Hinds County system, you would be better of with a digital scanner.
