I know this has been asked millions of times before, but I've tried searching and wasn't able to find a conclusive result. A buddy and I plan on purchasing a scanner to install in a deuce and a half for listening to various sources, primarily civil aviation, and military aviation if possible. that's where my question comes in. Is there a yes or no answer to whether military aircraft transmissions are encrypted or not? or is it subjective to the area, base, aircraft, etc. And do we need a digital trunking scanner to listen to them should they not be encrypted? We're looking at the Uniden BCD996T and the Uniden BCT15. We would like to go with the BCT15, if possible, but if we can listen to mil air with the 996T then we'll splurge. If it helps, we live in AZ and will do most of our listening in AZ.

The answer is "system-specific". It depends on what system you want to hear and what channel/talkgroup in that system.

The answer is "system-specific". If I remember correctly, some mil-air systems are digital. Civil-air systems generally are not.

We're looking at the Uniden BCD996T and the Uniden BCT15. We would like to go with the BCT15, if possible, but if we can listen to mil air with the 996T then we'll splurge.

I will defer to Uniden experts.

If it helps, we live in AZ and will do most of our listening in AZ.

Listing specific towns, or entities, would make it easier to give specific advise about system-types, etc.

Any of the Uniden newer scanners will do milcoms with the exception of the 346xt. Most all scanners do civilian vhf air frequencies. The only way to find out if any of the bases or areas are digital, and trunked, is to look in the database for the areas that you will be monitoring. Of course, if it is the USCBP and other Fed frequencies, they are digital and encrypted;)

I appreciate the info. I know they will all work with civil air communication for the most part. I'm a pilot, so I'm pretty familiar with how all that works. I'll check the database to see what Davis Monthan, and Luke AFB is using, as well as our local Public Safety agencies.

This is a little off topic, but where did you get the deuce and a half? Been looking for one in decent shape, but can't seem to find one in NorCal.

When i had my HP-1 all i had to do was Tap Military and it scanned McConnell greatly it even had a little Tank Symbol when it landed on a Channel some ways i wished i had the scanner back again :cool: Ra

Another question to go along with my initial inquiry. As I understand, if it's not listed as Project 25 on this list Arizona Trunking Systems , I don't need a Project 25 capable scanner like the bcd996xt, would this be correct? Or is there other types that require a digital trunking scanner like the 996xt. Pardon my lack of knowledge, since I know you guys probably get this a million times a week.

It's my best friend's truck, but we're joining forces to renovate it and outfit it with a scanner and a multitude of other things. He obtained his current Deuce out here in AZ in Punkin Center, and got it for a SCREAMING deal (along the lines of $3500) with only about 6000 miles. It's a 1976 I believe with a manual tranny and no power steering, he's got a lead on an A3 model (power steering, auto tranny, ctis, etc.) that he's gonna get hopefully by the end of the month. that is the one that we are going to be outfitting. It's gonna be converted to a double cab, one rear axle removed (bobbed), intercom installed, scanner, CB, center console, new air ride seats, and a long list of other things. My apologies for getting off topic as well, if you want more info, feel free to PM me, I might be able to find you some leads in NORCAL, or Oregon.
