newbie scanner frq have questions 96-pro TNX KC4YVK

HEy All,
Been into ham radio for 12 yrs but this scanner stuff is new to me. Having bought a used Radio Shack 96 pro and found the pdf manual , which prints out to the size of a school text book, I am a little over whelmed with the v banks etc.
I have a friend I am going to clone off of to get some good freqs.
ANy sugestions on software ( I know I have to buy some type of serial cable ) that would be useful in retaining the freqs from the scanner and help me add addditional freq etc.?
Anything on this site I should check out. Just signed up the other day. Look forward to cahtting and the forums 73's KC4YVK

First off, welcome!!!!!! The best software for the Pro-96 is Win96 from Don Starr Software. I will provide you the link to it. It has a 30 day free trial, but it is well worth the $30.00 after the free trial is http://www.starrsoft.com/software/win96/default.asp

ANy ideas on werer to buy a cheap cable for the pc to radio to work with this software. I saw you can make one but I am lazy.

The Yaesu CT-29A cable also works but you need to add a
stereo to mono 1/8 adapter (This is what I use), it

GRE makes the scanner and on their website you can order the programming cable for 14.99 plus postage. I have one and it works.
