Newbie to NYC looking for subway info...

Long time trunkedradio.net/rr.com member, first time poster here...

Okay, I'm hoping there are a couple people in here who can help me.

I've just moved here, and I'd really like to monitor subway radio talk when I'm on the subways...

I've been to the RR Database page that covers this topic, and there are a couple of entries:

161.19000 158.88000 B 127.3 IRT SUBWAY FM
161.50500 158.77500 B 127.3 BMT SUBWAY FM
161.56500 158.80500 B 127.3 IND SUBWAY FM

Are these the actual channels you'll hear subway traffic on?
Also, which of the two freqs (the 161 or the 158) should I be listening to?
And while I've googled for this info, which trains are which?
IRT = which trains?
BMT = which trains?
IND = which trains?

I can't seem to find definitive answers online.

Also, I noticed the subway guys all use Vertex Standard handhelds with DTMF pads... and if you sit in the driver car, you can hear a weird tone burst when something comes over the air. What is this? And does this limit my listening abilities.

(I'm using an ICOM IC-W32A transceiver to listen, btw)

I'd appreciate any and all help.

Check this website out www.n2nov.net He has just about every frequency for NYC on that website. Listening to the MTA underground is quite a trip. A few more frequencies

160.500 NYPD Transit Division BX PL 103.5
160.905 NYPD Transit Division Man PL 103.5
160.305 NYPD Transit Division Bklyn PL 103.5
160.965 NYPD Transit Division Qns PL 103.5

As far as which trains are which

1,2,3,4,5,6,7,9 trains are all IRT
I'm at a loss to remember which other trains were BMT. Another good website to check out www.nycsubway.org

161.505 BMT/IRT 7 Line

I've been away from NYC for a while but from what i remember unless its has changed since i was a kid growing up there and working for MTA for several years his is what i could recall:

BMT stands for Brooklyn,Manhattan,Transit and {trains are L, Q, M, N, E, F, G, J(from what I could remember)

IND "Independant" line A, B, C, D

IRT Interburough Rapid Transit: 1, 2, 3, 4,5,6,7,9

Does anyone know what freq I'd hear on the V train?

Are all the orange line (6th av) trains the same?

Manhattan: Nassau St, Broadway lines

IND Independent System
Manhattan: 8th Ave, 6th Ave, 14th St lines
A B C D E F G L V

For V (and other 6th Ave lines) they are on the same freq in the Bronx, Manhattan, and Queens. When in Brooklyn, the B and D are aligned with the old BMT and use that channel instead of the IND channel.

You can also listen to the Staten Island Rapid Transit line on 470.4375 pl 141.3
There is also some activity on the NYCTA Signal Dept freq of 156.1050 pl 67.0
