Howdy all,

after attempting to use my old radio shack scanner to listen to the goings on around me I have found it is just about worthless. Now I’m scanning the classified to see what’s available. I see the sds100 is all the rage but pricey. Any other suggestions or words of wisdom, or just bite the bullet and go for the sds100. I see one in the classifieds now but I guess I don’t have the permissions yet to contact seller. TIA

Welcome to RadioReference & the Texas forum.

Johnson County is on the FWRRS trunked system. While, for now, the Johnson County cities on the system are using P25 Phase I, the system is capable of P25 Phase II. At present, of the various cities on FWRRS, several are using Phase II: Arlington, Grand Prairie, Irving, and several in Ellis County. I would suspect that, eventually, all the agencies would move to Phase II.

Most of the law enforcement agencies in Johnson County are encrypted. No scanner can decode encrypted transmissions. However, the various fire departments are not encrypted.

The Johnson County layer on the system is simulcast. You indicate that you are in the Godley area. One of the simulcast sites is in Crowley, one in Cleburne, & the third in Alvarado. Simulcast can make it hard to receive the system reliably. It is extremely location specific. If you were really close to one of the sites, it's stronger signal might override signals from the other sites. If not, then transmissions from the sites will arrive at your location at slightly different times, depending on the distances. With the signals being out of synch, most scanners (except for the SDS series) will have a hard time monitoring a simulcast system. You might hear some radio traffic, some garbled & some relatively clear, or maybe not be able to hear anything at all. The problem is so location dependent that in some cases, moving your scanner to a slightly different place may make a huge difference. There's no way to know in advance whether or not you'll be affected. If you eventually decide on a scanner other than the SDS100, or it's base/mobile sibling the SDS200, buy it from a dealer that will allow you to return it without a hassle or large restock fee.

Read more about simulcast in this article in the Wiki:
Simulcast digital distortion - The RadioReference Wiki

Options other than an SDS series scanner to deal with simulcast would include one of the Unication pagers. Most users of that unit praise it's performance in receiving simulcast systems. However, it is not a true scanner, and you are limited to the number of talkgroups that you can monitor at one time.

Another option is the Blue Tail receiver. It also is reported to work well, but like the Unication pager, there are limitations. on what can be monitored. BlueTail Technologies – BlueTail Technologies

I don't have either of these two, so check the forums for more comments on their performance.

Your other option, if you only wanted to monitor at home, would be to use your PC and one or more of the SDR dongles, Here again, I am not using this option, so check the forums for more information.

(You need to have a few more posts under your belt until your status is upgraded & you can use the messaging option to contact a seller of a scanner in the classifieds.)

Thank you hiegtx , I appreciate all the info. It is a lot to digest and seems pretty complex. I will continue to read up on the items you described and other posts. In a way I’m glad I can’t reach out to the seller of the sds100 as I would be buying while not really understand the equipment. Thanks again.

The SDS100/200 mentioned really are the best scanners for the simulcast traffic on the FWRRS. But even living in Lake Worth, TX, I'm still having problems receiving Layer 2 on that system. When I'm hooked up to an outside antenna on a mast, I have to attenuate the signal in the settings on the scanner for that layer. But if I'm using a rubber ducky antenna, I go back and turn off the attenuation for L2. But it definitely is the radio with all the bells and whistles with those two models.

Wow, I'm glad I proofread this before hitting send. I'd also mention that the Unication G5 is by far the best receiver and it's a much more professional grade pager/receiver. But it doesn't have all the bells and whistles that the Uniden scanners have. It is more difficult to learn but once you learn it it is very easy and there's nothing to it. You do have to program it by PC though. I wish there was a way to program it by hand but it's probably the radio I carry on me the most.I said all this and a little more a little while ago but when I look back my mention of the G5 was not there. Weird! I think Unication has finally realized the market for us scanner heads. I say that because they started adding features like the capability to hold and lock out channels. But a radio like the SDS series allows you to carry it with you and make changes, add programming, and really just do all kinds of things that the G5 will never allow. If you get good reception out at your place with one of the SDS radios, I'd definitely recommend going with the SDS series.

I haven't really looked at the Blue Tail yet but I'm going to take a look at that myself and see what it offers. I saw a mention of it recently but I'm going to look at the link posted above and check it out.

Scanners today are nothing like they used to be. They may seem daunting at first but they really are very function loaded machines. I really like the SDS100/200 scanners I have. It's just this fishbowl I live in, Lake Worth, that gives me reception issues at various times. It's been a long time since I've been through Godley, Texas. But if I remember right, it's not too far from the very hilly Rio Vista area. You should be sure you have good line of sight reception of the towers you were trying to receive and that the terrain doesn't block receiving. I've got problems to the Northeast and East with the terrain around me. I have a few different masts up and they help a lot. But I still don't quite get up high enough to not have the terrain interfere with some reception. I can't hear Denton County for example, but people further away from it often have no problems on rubber ducky antennas. They just don't have that terrain that blocks their reception like I do.

Good luck on whatever you choose and I hope it all works out well for you!

Brian, I want to first thank you and higetx for the welcome and taking the time to put together so much information. I am finding a lot of things have changed, it is much more complex. My level of investment is higher and the amount of information to be had varies depending on my location.

you both have provided a lot of information and equipment I need to learn more about. I need to spend a few hours breaking down the information and doing research. The weather the next week may be perfect for this work.

Godley is just south of Cresson and north of Cleaburn. I’ll have to do some research on which tower the fd and pd use and check line of sight from my house. I won’t be putting up a mast outside, I’m just not that committed. I’ll start with YouTube and forums and see where that gets me. Thanks again

You bet Hector! My pleasure. And in Johnson County, they will usually be using the Johnson County Simulcast site for most traffic. But they do also occasionally use Layer 1 and 2 as well as the Mansfield site. I don't receive the Midlothian site from my house but I think they partially use it too sometimes. But primarily, it'll be the Johnson County Simulcast site carrying most of the Johnson County traffic.

Yeah, I've got some snow on the ground right now. I love it and I'm glad we're finally getting a winter! I've been listening to TXDOT tonight and the trucks are driving around sanding the roads and reporting road temperatures and where bad conditions are. I've also been listening to a lot of the various agencies on the FWRRS. Not a lot of traffic tonight because there really aren't a lot of people out. But there have been some accidents and people slipping off the roads and that will probably pick up as daytime comes around.

If you have any questions, there are plenty of good people here who would be happy to help. So just ask and I'm sure somebody will know and be able to help with answers :)

Brian my thought is to listen in on my little bubble, Godley, Cleaburn, Joshua and maybe Cresson. I’m in the flight path to both airports so that may be cool too. Hearing the big city isn’t a priority but may hold value if something bad were to happen. Having said that, I am looking into renewing my 2m ham license. That would be handy in an emergency situation. I had an alinco radio back in the day that was awesome. It looks like it has been too long for a renew my license, I’ll have to retest. I’d like to keep my old call sign N5WPZ but I don’t know if that is possible yet. Looks like I have plenty to do and figure out.
Anyhow, snow is getting worse and it is chilly. Stay safe and warm and stay put if possible.

Is there a list of clubs in the area, or where would someone find a list? I’ll Google it and do a search of course. I am interested in testing and getting my license active again.
