Newbie with a BC72XLT

Just got a BC72XLT for Christmas and for the life of me can not figure it out. Would love to start with hearing local (Ashland, MA 01721) police and fire but am also curious about what else is out there.

I found a reference site that says police is on 483.1125 but can not get hear anything after listening for over 20 minutes. And I just heard sirens off in the distance.

Have a look at this link for your county,Middlesex County, Massachusetts (MA) Scanner Frequencies and Radio Frequency Reference
it's loaded with freq's that you should be able to monitor.
