Newbie with Pro-651

Hello everyone. Just bought the Pro-651 scanner and I will downloading some files and transferring stuff in the next few days to get up and running, but in the meantime is there any way I can just turn the scanner on and have it pick up anything in my area without programming? I thought I saw something about it being able to pickup close or nearby signals. However, I could have misinterpreted that. Hahaha. Any info would be appreciated.
