good day,

I got a scanner about a year ago (Radioshack pro-95) Dual trunking Scanner... I have been out of it for a while but am trying to get back into my scanner.

There is one thing that I have never understood completely, I am unsure what the Dual Trunking means? I have read the manual, but cannot get a grasp.... hope someone can put it in terms that I can understand.

Thanks,

Brook

Thanks,....

Hello Jay,

Thanks for the post, but am still unclear ... What does MOT and EDACS mean? Is there an easy explaination on how to take advantage of these features on my scanner?

Thanks again,

Brook

They are trunking systems... Motorola and EDACS.

Info in the wiki about trunking:
http://wiki.radioreference.com/index.php/Trunking

Depending on where you live, there may or may not be systems of these types that you can monitor.

Thanks....

Thanks Jay,

I am doing a little more research to try to completely figure this out... I am unclear on what trunking actually means, and how it applies to my scanner

a little better understanding I think

ok.... I have read a couple of articles and have a general I think?

A trunked system is a shared frequency? right?

Between Mot & EDACS, but how do I use this to my advantage when using my scanner? How does it benefit me as a scanner user?

IE: If you are monitoring public-safety (PD, FD...) and they are on this type of system (MOT or EDACS), you will need to program your scanner accordingly.

What system(s) local to you are you attempting to monitor (link to the system in the RR database or city/state)?

Further reading will not help you much in a practical sense, unless you have one or more trunked systems in your area to which you want to listen. If you don't then your dual trunking scanner will not be an advantage to you. To answer Jay's question, go to your state and then county here:
http://www.radioreference.com/modules.php?name=RR
and look to see if there are any trunked systems listed...usually at the top of the page. If not, then go back to enjoying your scanner on conventional frequencies. If you do, then maybe Jay can provide further guidance once you tell him the state/county info.

regarding truncking frequencies....

good day... thank you for the link to find the trunking frequencies in my area...Fayetteville, arkansas...

So, now that I Know the trunking codes, I just program them into a empty channel in one of my banks?

According to the listing in the database:
http://www.radioreference.com/modules.php?name=RR&sid=999
...you should be able to program in the 4 control channels (frequencies in RED) setting each one's mode to MOT, and set the bank type to MOT. However, the database here on RR shows that all of the PD talkgroups are digital (D appears in the "Mode" column) which the Pro-95 is unable to decode. You should be able (if the database is up-to-date) to listen to the FD as well as "Government Services".

It may help you to understand trunked systems a little better if you download Win95 from starrsoft.com. That way you can "see" the info laid out on the screen. While I feel it's important to learn how to program a scanner by hand, Win95 is an excellent way to get you up and running quickly.

Win95

Hello....

I have downloaded the Win95 Software and am looking over it and will post a response tomorrow if that is ok...

Just one quick question / note: Do I code the frequencies for the Trunking Systems in the primary channel screen or in the bottom right under the button "Clear Trunk Info".

I will post more tomorrow... i'm sure I will have questions.

Thanks so much to all...

Brook,

Re-read the Trunking Basics article and don't skip any part of it. That article was designed to explain trunking to a person who has no knowledge of it, and little knowledge of radio in general. If you skip parts of it, the concept does not get across.

trunking article

good day loumaag,

Thanks for the tip, and yes I have read the article, and now have re-read the article and I have a grasp on the concept Trunked Systems.....

Now, my next step is how to properly program my Pro-95 scanner to take full advantage of the trunked systems in my area of Fayetteville, arkansas.

Thanks,

Loading Trunking Frequencies & Talkgroups?

good day....

I appreciate everyones assistance in trying to learn the potential of my scanner....

For loading trunking frequencies, I just load them into my empty bank position right? Do I need to do anything special when "scanning" the trunked frequencies, or will they automatically be included in the scan function on my Frequency Banks?

Also, Jay.... you mention on the Screenshot the ability to load "Talkgroups" via the Win95 software....

What is a talkgroup, how do I scan / utilize them using my scanner?

Thanks,

Hope i'm not too much trouble.... I appreciate everyone's help!
