I've arrived in st.johns newfoundland with my pro 106 digital scanner... i've all of a sudden noticed that i cant monitor the RNC TGRPS in the analog system and the digital system is too far away for me to monitor... i've given the RCMP analog TGRPs a try and i've been the getting the bell island talkgroup... but the last bit of chatter i heard was an hour ago....is there any police in st johns area that i can monitor???

please any help or frequencies would be muchly appreciated because i believe the bearcat1 website is quite a bit out of date.. but correct me if i'm wrong
thanks

Secret police

I suspect that what you are experiencing in Newfoundland is what I've been experiencing here in the Halifax Region, which encompasses a lot of RCMP talkgroups as well. The last time you heard any police transmissions was the last time. We now have SECRET POLICE. They will rationalize this new wrinkle by citing that the criminals and the drug dealers have scanners too and this is the price the legitimate, law abiding scanner owners must pay for a stable society. BS, I say ... the real reason is they don't want ANYONE, including the media, to know what they're up to. When a police force operates under a cloak of secrecy to this extent, I think it's time we all should start looking over our collective shoulders. The police had been using cell phones for communications that might tip the bad guys or compromise undercover personnel, so no one can convince me this level of security is necessary in a free and open society. I know in my area, I've heard disparaging remarks about media being on the scene ... law enforcement apparently doesn't like this at all.
Police, and especially the RCMP, have proven why they don't like people to know what they're doing and where they're doing it ... or, has everyone forgotten what was done to the Polish man who was killed in Vancouver Airport? People with scanners might be, ... could also be carrying cameras ... many of us have photography as a hobby and I have freelanced photos in the past. Police don't like people with cameras because facts sometimes "conflict" with the explanations they are prepared to give the public. Now , perhaps, you know why you will no longer hear any police calls on your scanners.

The RCMP uses a combination of radio systems in Newfoundland.
1-Northern Avalon uses The provincal EDACS Trunk System the 2 primary users apear to
the RCMP(are analog) and RNC(using Pro-voice digital, not scannable).
2-Southern Avalon uses a EDACS SCAT(Single Channel Area Tower) System.
3-All points west of Clarenville uses a Motorola P-25 system(digital, scannable with correct scanner).

All of the systems are VHF. Check the Database for additional info.

So how do we scan them? What type of scanner and frequencies are used to listen to RNC/RCMP channels on the Avalon Peninsula in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada (specifically St. John's)? Name a model of scanner that can do it (I want to buy one).

Are there online feeds?

For RNC You would need a p7100 with aegis and or provoice keys.

M A com Harris P7100IP 800MHz Edacs w Provoice P25 Aegis Digital Free US SHIP | eBay

except that that one is 800mhz and you need VHF.

You'd also need the programming cable and the software.

With all of that said, it might not work depending on if they're using encryption, which they're probably not.

The sad part about this is that so much of their comms have switched to the laptop delivery that the chatter over the radios is quite likely very minimal and mostly just officer check-ins and timers.

For RCMP you could get any digital scanner capable of p25, such as the homepatrol or the new Unidens.
