Greeting all !

After years of my brother riding me, I went in to take the tech exam. I have a Q&A app on my android that I would run everytime I had a few minutes, and every night. I started nailing all the practice exams, so I started studying for the general when a local clud had an exam session a couple of weeks ago.

Passed the tech, they gave me the general, passed it. THey said here, take the extra. I told them hadn't even got to studying for that. Took it anyway. Failed it by 8. They offered it to me again, but I was burned out, and told them I was going to go study for it, The just wanted to see someone pass all three :) I''ll be down there next month to try again.

So I am on th air! Picked up a like-new used FT8900 quad bander mobile for my 80 mile a day commute. Also Interested in other modes on HF and to learn CW.

Oh, and new to this site. I like it !

Cheers,
Brent

Congratulations, Brent - I was first licensed in 1952 and that 18th-floor(?) Boston FCC office was scary with all the dark Oak tables and patrolling FCC inspectors( trying to look tough, but all were helpful for a 13-year-old :) ) - Did similar thing - Took general and 2nd Phone and passed both, didn't try for 1st Phone (Commercial License, but DID get the RADAR endorsement. :)

I was also a devout acrophobiac- and couldn't look out the windows close up. BUT, for some reason I was feeling SO durn competent that day, I got in the shaky elevator and rode UP to the highest level of the Boston Custom Hous - the observation platform - and actually went out on it to look over Boston Harbor (with shaky polio-weakened legs) and drank it all in. I was invincible!

As I returned inside - I noticed a door with a "Keep out - Radio Technnician only" and feeling my new "Commercial-License" oats, entered and admired the banks of glowing Transmitters, Repeaters and assorted amazing racks of receivers, some military-surplus. Nobody was around. I touched nothing.

As I scoped out that floor of goodies, I noticed a ladder in the middle of the room that led up into a pyramid-shaped structure above me with what appeared to be a hatch at the top. - Gathering all the bravado I could summon in my new-found invicibility, I climbed UP that 20' ladder to the hatch and gingerly released the slide-bolt and swung it open on it's steel hinges. It was an antenna and lightning-rod area about 3' square and beckoning me.

My head was still below the opening, and in one last invicibility thrust, I stepped up 2 more rungs and stuck out waist-high into infinity - the highest I had ever been in my short life.

My Dad was an Acrophobiac also and almost fell off the NY Empire State building on his 1934 honeymoon before his Bride pulled him back.- A strange urge to return to Earth some Acrophobiacs experience, and I was feeling it there atop the Custom House!

I somehow managed to close and rebolt the hatch, and descended the ladder, sitting on the floor for a long time before heading home.

Hope you enjoyed my story. - The times have changed SO much, but the emotions of getting your license and advancing immediately into higher echelons is a heady trip. ;-)

Good story Tom. Reminds me of 31 years ago when I had to go into the Pittsgurgh FCC division to take the Radio Telephone Operators License Exam. - second class. Passing it was a requirement of graduating my early higher education. (yes! I passed it)

Thanks milkman! Thanks again for providing a friendly testing environment. I went there for a tech and walked out with a general. I took the extra but messed it up. I am going for the extra next weekend at the Carafest. I am studying for it this time :)

Thanks Milkman! And thanks again for creating a friendly testing environment. I was going to be content with a tech ticket, but on passing that, you guys handed me the general exam. Then you handed me the extra. Having not studied at all for the extra, I didn't pass it. I am going for my extra next weekend at the Carafest. I have been wanting to make it up to the club house for a meeting, but I have'nt been able to swing it. It's not exactly on my way to anywhere:)

cheers!
