Good evening, I been doing a little research and reading

But wanted to ask, Nexedge can be monitored if not encrypted correct?

Have you seen or do you monitor any VHF hi Nexedge?

Nexedge has just come about very recently in Pike and Dubois counties and I am trying to figure out if more rural areas are going to do the same? Verses use SafeT?

If anyone would give there opinion and comments I would greatly appreciate them

Any suggested reading is also welcomed feel free to PM me if necessary

I thank you for your time.

It can be monitored via the software program DSD, or a NXDN capable radio. However, I believe encryption is pretty much a standard option on the radios and it's fairly easy to implement without any added financial expense, so I would imagine most public safety agencies would take advantage of that. But it's certainly worth a try.

Basic encryption is included with all Kenwood NexEdge radios. Turning it on is just a simple setting in the programming software. Since the signal is digital, it doesn't deteriorate the signal.

If the agencies you want to listen to are running NexEdge conventional, you can monitor them with a Kenwood Nexedge radio. If they are UHF or VHF, they can be monitored with an Icom IDAS radio if they are running in 6.25KHz mode. Kenwoods do 12.5KHz NXDN, however the Icom's will not.

If they are running Kenwood trunking, you will only be able to monitor them if you have a Kenwood radio that has been programmed with the correct programming key. You cannot monitor a Kenwood NexEdge trunking system by using a NexEdge radio in conventional mode and sitting on one of the frequencies. This may work with other trunking system, but it will NOT work with the Kenwood NexEdge trunking protocol.
Icom and Kenwood trunking are NOT compatible, either.

Maybe some day the scanner manufacturers will catch up with this.

There is NO current models of digital scanners from Radio Shack (aka GRE) Uniden that will work right out of the box. People do not want to spend extra money for extras.Todays scanner user wants the features built into the radio to work right away. Why spend extra money on two way radio with the transmitter section disabled. A local city, town, or county might be doing this to protect the officers and keeping criminals from listening in to a transmission that could be heard in the clear. Bedford PD in has all of their talkgroups that are *encripted". After 911 a lot of changes have happened for a reason and that reason is protecting the users of the system.
