With the new Nextel phones, we now have the ability to create talkgroups on the fly and have up to 21 people in the same direct connect call. Would anyone else be interested if I were to startup a group so we could get information out quickly on breaking events, etc? It may be interesting, especially with all of the activity in the area for the All Star Game.

What model phone do you have? If it is a new phone such as the I275, I836, I605 or any other phone that was released in the last few months you may have the capability.

The I860 does not have group connect. Take a look over at www.nextel.com and you can see a list of phones that have this feature.
I believe that the following list are the models that have this feature:

I275
I355
I605
I836
I850

Will be released soon:

I760
I560
I870

It is a great feature and one that has been getting extensive use. I have been in direct connect conference calls with 12 users and to be honest, I feel that this is one of the best features that Nextel has come up with to date. I really think that we will be able to have quite a bit of fun with the group, letting everyone know what is happening and also what frequency/talk group for the rest of us to tune to in order to listen in on the action. All in real time.
We will even be able to narrow down the interest in case it really catches on with the group. For instance, one group for police/fire activity, another for aircraft monitoring, etc. We can even use the group to get the word out on new talkgroups that we need help in identification. I really think that once we get this setup, we will probably really enjoy the added capability that it offers.

The group has been setup. Currently we only have 4 users but all are welcome to join us.
