Nextel Off Network Direct Talk As Intercoms

I have several old Nextels that I use occasionally off network in the Direct Talk mode. Normally these are simply turned off when not in use. I have been giving some thought to placing these around the house and leaving them on and using them as sort of an intercom. I am curious if anybody here does that and also do I want to leave them connected to the charger 24/7 or do I just want to charge them at regular intervals? If so, how often? Also, if there any sort of timer available that I could connect these to that would charge them automatically at regularly scheduled intervals?

Get one of those wall timers, they are all over the place. Home Depot, Lowes, WalMart, hardware store. Have it set to turn on a couple hours every day.
