Can Nextel Two way radios be heard on a scanner, and what frequencies?

Nextel operates in the 806-821/851-866 band (maybe others too)
using Motorola's iDEN standard.
No scanner can receive iDEN and I think it is encrypted anyway.

Yes the vocoder is from the same family. And that is about the end of the similarities.

iDEN actually uses several different vocoders depening on if it is on a 3:1 or a 6:1 phone channel or 6:1 group or private call.

The iDEN TDMA format is proprietary to Motorola, as is the modulation.

Well, the Motorola logo on the radios is "very similar"! :twisted:

As with Provoice, the manufacturer of Nextel won't give out the patented specs to scanner makers, so it's doubtful you'll ever monitor it.

BUT, it can be done. Law enforcement does have a device capable of doing so as told to me by a supervising detective in a major NYC area police dept. I think this is how they caught one major NYC mobster several years back as reported in the media. He thought nobody could monitor his Nextels.

Most law enforcement monitoring of cell phone (nextel included) systems is done at the switch with a wire tap warrent.

Yes you can monitor them with the test equipment used to service the system.

Regarding cell phone monioring for LE... Regardless of there being devices (Never seen or heard of them and I work in the industry) LE cannot listen without prior consent from the wireless carrier. As Jay mentioned it's done at the switch and requires prior arrangement.

I'm sure that coordination with Nextel and LE happen along the same lines as it's the easiest way to get it done. LE typically don't have highly skilled officers who know how to operate service monitors. :lol:

I also seriously doubt that they will just sell one to anyone no matter how much money you have. I wonder what their requirements are.

Scottsdale isn't too far from me. Maybe one of these days I'll get off my lazy butt and go pay them a visit. I don't have the money to spend on one, but it would be neat to have a brochure or two - maybe they'd even demo one for me if I asked real nice-like.... 8)

Check the website I gave the link to - the equipment indeed exists and if you are Joe Fed and you want one, they have a special link just for you where one can be ordered via the GSA. Now last I checked, the feds don't put up nextel sites so why would they want one, if not for the ability to monitor certain individuals *without* input or assistance from Nextel?

I'll leave you to ponder that.
