I just bought a bc246t and i was hoping to listen to people on two way radios. Now everyone i know is using nextel, is there anyway i can listen to nextel. Thanks

No, Nextel uses IDEN tecknology, basically its digital..I would like to listen to Nextel too..By the way SprintPcs bought out Nextel (or a Merger) so anyone with Nextels will be turning in the radio phones withen a year(2006), being that Nextel was going to relocated there freq banding anyway..SprintPcs has a Ready link phone similar to Nextel except the connected time is a little slower, its tecknology is VOIP..I have one there RL phones i like it.. I'd say 2008 is an agreeable deadline to presume the iDEN network will start winding down. Sprint is smart enough to create a network that will rival the DirectConnect feature before shutting down the iDEN networks and I believe they can do it in that time. We'll have to see later this year once the merger is OKed to see what's released. As it stands internally we continue to hear "conduct business as usual." There are transition teams working on merging the two as we speak though.

New Sprint Nextel to target enterprises, stay with iDEN; Motorola contract extended
Sprint and Nextel last month announced plans for a $35 billion merger, but the combination will not cause Nextel's enterprise users to lose the valued push-to-talk capability that has driven the wireless carrier's subscriber growth and customer loyalty, particularly in the government and public-safety sectors.
Depicted as a merger of equals, the deal is expected to generate $12 billion in synergies between two wireless carriers that reportedly boast the highest average revenue per user (ARPU) in the wireless industry. The new company, to be known as Sprint Nextel, will have 36 million customers, giving it the kind of scale most analysts believe is necessary to compete effectively against Cingular Wireless and Verizon Wireless, the two largest mobile carriers.
One of the greatest cost savings associated with the deal is that the merged Sprint Nextel will have to build only one 3G network to provide advanced wireless services and will have enough scale to negotiate favorable terms with vendors for the project. While the long-term future of Sprint Nextel will rely on this new CDMA EV-DO network, the next several years will see the merged company continue to maintain both Sprint's CDMA network and Nextel's iDEN network.
In fact, the merged company plans to continue investment in the iDEN network at least through 2007 as it works to develop push-to-talk technology over the CDMA network.
“I think the iDEN network has a very long life,” Nextel President and CEO Tim Donahue said during the Dec. 15, 2004, press conference announcing the merger. “It is my hope and expectation that we can extend the life of iDEN by offering services to public safety, government and push-to-talk-centric businesses who can take advantage of this great network that's already built".
So they are going to continue adding iDEN infrastructure for a couple of more years and they wouldn't be doing that unless they knew it would be used long enough to pay for its self.
Motrola has already signed a contract to make a new multipurpose phone that work with it all.
By the way, AIRINC is now building trunked systems at airports using iDEN so will be in use for many years. This was discussed several weeks ago on RR.

The solution to that problem is to never write anything that you're not 100% sure is factual. If you don't know for sure, either don't write anything at all (lurk and learn) or be sure to label what you do write as being what you think, your personal wild speculation, your opinion, etc. We have enough misinformation and confusion floating around without (in my opinion) clueless people constantly adding to it. On the other hand, reading comprehension is another problem. Even when one does clearly label ones uninformed speculation as such, inevitably someone out there will still think you're stating a correct or incorrect fact.ThornyI said:

I don't know that Nextel name will go away. Nextel has a big following in public safety and business customers. Sprint is more of an individual name. There is no reason that they have to get rid of either name.

Yeah, this is a GREAT resource, but there are too many who obviously get their jollies spouting off from behind their monitors. One of the unfortunate by-products of technological advancement. Bet the same folks wouldn't have been so brash at a radio club meeting in the 1970's...
First of all i want to apolizie for not being 100% acurate..I was going by what i've heard basically by other forums on other websites and that was after the annocement back in Dec. and really hav'ent followed up on it sense then..So i apprectate being corrected on my errors; I'm still new on these forums and learning...But i was happy that Sprint and Nextel did merge due to some problems of Nextel might have some problems on the 800 Mhz band that may cause some interfering on the public service bands. Ok, why i'm i happy about this, will i'm a scanner enthusest (sp) and would of like to listen to Nextel but unforuturely can't...Now if i got this right, Sprint/Nextel moves to the 1900Ghz in the future, does't this open up some freqs. in the 800Mhz band for us scanner listeners??I hope so. Now some where in this mess i guess we lost the OP of this thread, and hope that we did'nt scare him or her off!!
