I hear the Division of Motor Vehicles, Highway Patrol Unit is merging with the Division State Police, becoming Troop G. They have started to use the 700's series for their Unit ID's on the NH State Police Frequencies

That's funny as they were split from the State Police about five years ago. Before that, they were a separate agency up until some time in the late 1970s.

There used to be a page with the history of the HP, but I can't seem to find it at the moment.

What's the deal with the Highway Patrol anyway? First they get separated from DMV, now they're about to become part of the NHSP?

I remember living in Nashua when they were known as Motor Carrier Enforcement (I think that was the correct title) officers; the fleet back in the mid-1990's consisted of blue Chevy Caprice station wagons.

As far as the web site that had the history of the Highway Patrol, I know exactly what you're talking about. There was a legal dispute a couple of years ago over domain names, or something like that.

Somewhat related, but would it surprise anyone if current Highway Patrol officers who became part of the State Police were, shall we say, nudged into retirement? When Massachusetts merged the Metro Police (Metro. District Commission), Capitol Police, and Registry of Motor Vehicles Police into the Mass. State Police, quite a few officers from those agencies ended up leaving shortly after the merger (I saw that tidbit on a web site that went into the history of the MDC Police; I don't have time at this very moment to find the exact site).

They're wearing the SP uniforms

In the past Highway Enforcement was wearing green pants and the military pink tops (but if you ask them they're "granite gray"... I've noticed that they're now wearing the green tops and pink pants like the Troopers... Their cruisers still have the MV plates, not 700 SP plates... for now.

Under the right light, you will notice the pink in their pants.

OK, my 2 cents.

Until 1980 or so my Dad was on the state. He worked the portable scales and liscense recovery in mostly southern NH. I clearly remember his shirt being dark green and the pants a grey with dark green stripe/s down the leg. The hat was of course Stetson. Also giving them the name Smokey. For it was the same hat Smokey The Bear used to wear.

When he first joined up they where DMV and no association to SP. Then they merged. I remember the change. His plate was DMV until the merge then SP. I also remember he didn't carry a firearm either until they merged with SP. This was a critical decission in his retirement because he basically left Nashua PD to stop wearing his firearm. This could be just an excuse I had heard in my younger years because now I'm his 24 hour caregiver and the stories tend to change at 88 YO.

On another note I find it kind of funny that they used to use Fury II with 440's in them. Now they use Charger RT's I believe. Gotta admit Chrysler did make an awesome muscle car and if you've ever seen a Statey in short sleeves you'll acknowledge that muscle deserves muscle.

As for the troop I'm not sure that would be correct for the Alpha lettering determines they're area of coverage not the department they're in
