How exactly is it "awful"?

MPT is the #1 trunking format in the rest of the world, not counting our corner of it.

There's a reason for it.

I don't think the problem is due to the trunking method, I think that emergency services require a much higher level of coverage and reliability than that of commercial SMR users. I can't think of a single emergency service that has ever been happy on a commercial system...

Having said that P25 is a lot more scanner friendly and more inline with APCO recommendations.

True, but hopefully we will see the continued trend of Fire Departments NOT encrypting their Comms... Looks like interoperability is more important based on the RFP.

I thought the NFPA had spoken out against fire departments going digital for safety reasons. Or am I thinking that was only with respect to fireground communications?

No one said they are going encrypted...it was a sly comment about P25. The sky is not falling yet according to any reliable information.

Thanks - DaveH's comment doesn't say "if" ;)

You're right, should have said "if and when". Just a sly comment on NRPD, if
I recall one of the first PDs in Ontario to encrypt (trend-setters that they are...)

I sympathize with people who have trouble with an MPT-1327 sytem; sounds
like it was not set up too well, but seems to be some element of "I can't listen
to it easily, therefore a crappy system". If it turns out to be P25 clear conventional
or trunked, I'm happy. Don't forget that one key reason for digital is lower
bandwidth, all privacy arguments aside.

I'm here a lot
We can listen to the MPT -1327 system , as I do from Toronto without any problems. We just can't trunktrack it.
I guess when people hear "go to talkgroup 3" they want to see an alpha tag displayed on their radio.
What I do notice is that when they are broadcasting ,say on 420.575 that there will be a simulcast that is even clearer on 420.875. (at least out this way ) Another thing I notice is that there is a lot of "hang time" before the channel drops off. That can be aggravating. But, at least we can monitor it as it seems we are losing more and more PS as time goes on. :(

No, they want to be able to hold on talkgroup 3 and only hear that... Can't do that with MPT systems unless you hook up a PC.

Have they been encrypted that long? London PS switched to digital & encrypted mid-1997. Before that they had a digital 'privacy' channel they would switch to, but not all that often.

You got it! MPT1327 is a great trunking format, it just needs to done right!

I have a friend who works for NFFD... I've had a chance to see their setup. The problem isn't the trunking format - the company just doesn't really know what they're doing. A channel grant can take up to five seconds (because there is a big latency to connect the sites together for simulcast). I was listening to a call last year, the talkgroups were collapsing when a crew was in a fire. I'll see if I can find the sound clip, it's crazy!

PS They have displays on their radios, somebody posted the talkgroup listing in the DB... this is what my buddy's radio looked like.

Good to see them switch back to VHF... everyone else in Niagara is using it.
