To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Hi,

All the freq DB's say that the Niskayuna NY Police use a LTR system and they give the freqs but when I try to listen to them conventionlly I hear no voices? On one channel I do hear something that sounds like a mic keying up.

How can I find out if it is a LTR system that I can trunk track? If I can't track it, how can I listen to the voices conventionally?

Thanks

Firstly we need to know if yo9u have a scanner that can trunk track LTR. Secondly is this an LTR Standard, or Passport?

The sound of a "key up" you describe is an LTR data burst. If you hear it every ten or so seconds it is LTR Standard, if you hear it eveery two or so seconds its Passport. If its standard and your running a Radio Shack scanner that can do LTR (PRO-92/PRO-2067) then you just need to program the bank, and each freq as LTR, if your running a Bearcat, then you will need the LCN's. If Its an Passport system, you will need to program the freqs as conventional with NO DELAY on the repeaters, and monitor conventionally as ther is NO SCANNER CURRENTLY MADE that can trunktrack an Passport system.

The good news about passport is that there are data slicers being worked on that could lead to a future scanner that will trunk track Passport systems.

Thanks.

The Freq DB says that it is supposed to be LTR Standard.

Right now I am using a RS Pro95 which I know it won't pick up LTR, but I was trying to pick it up conventionally. On the first freq that they list in the DB I hear a key-up or chuff sound about every 10 seconds, on the other 3 freqs they list I either get nothing on 2 of them or a key-up/chuff every 10 seconds on the other 2 freqs.

I want to buy the Uniden bc250d but If I can't pick up Niskayuna LTR because it is passport or Mutli, then I won't buy that scanner.

Question:

1. If it is a LTR standard, should I be able to pick up voices in conventional mode. I know I won't get trunking. Right now I hear no voices at all?

Thanks

According to a message at http://www.fordyce.org/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=SchenedU;action=display;num=1074994101 the 855 frequency is conventional, used by the police. The other three channels are a standard LTR system and you can monitor the transmissions conventionally.

The 250D is cheaper than the 296D but has a few bugs for which there are no firmware udpates available. Do some searching here and at Strongsignals to see what user's complaints have been for the 250D. Both models will track standard LTR.

Yepper you can monitor conventionally, and you don't need a digital capable scanner for any LTR formats, thier are no digital LTR systems YET. On the LTR Regular system, with a Radio Shack LTR capable scanner (PRO-92/2067) you can just program in as LTR and have fun,.. on the Unidens you must program them in in LCN order. Monitor continuously over say a week's time, and you should hear traffic on it if its in use yet. With an LTR capable trunker, you will not only hear traffic, but also see talkgroups in use.

First, it's not a police system. It is a town local government system. The police use a single 800 MHz conventional channel.

Second, the system is hardly ever used. I'm not even sure why they built it. The various town services are still using the same channels they always have.
