They are allowed to have what every other driver in NJ has.

Headlights are white/clear
Turn signals are usually yellow/orange or red (rear only)

Seriously, under 18 should have no emergency warning lights. Also, you are not exempt from the restrictions on your license in regards to when and where you drive.

An Explorer is NOT a trained nor certified firefighter and has no special benefits attached. An Explorer, as a minor, has severe restrictions under OSHA, NJPEOSHA, and DMV. There have been a number of situations in which, under improper (or nonexistant) supervision, they have exceeded their training limitations and restrictions and done harm to themselves and others. If the Explorer needs to ask such a leading question, he/she bears watching.

Certified volunteer firefighters in the state of NJ are only allowed to have blue colored lights.

And an Explorer is not classified as a firefighter. Firefighter is a proud title to be earned the old fashioned way.

I have absolutely no problems dealing with the majority of Juniors and Explorers and, yes, they do perform valuable services in support of operations. There have been, and are, however, a few posts that have gone out and made their own rules, bought unauthorized equipment, and have even applied for Federal Homeland Security Grants without working within their Department leadership. There are still a couple of nasty Superior Court cases out there awaiting judgement that the Explorers caused and are an embarrassment to the town, the Department, and leaving their parents holding the bag. These few sour the entire program for the most that are good people and future firefighters.

sounds more like bad leadership than the jrs faults.

True - but only to a point. The Explorers in question were told NO by their department leadership, didn't like the answer they got, and just did what they wanted anyway - incurring costs, running afoul of local regulations, winding up with radios and equipment that they were not licensed for nor approved by their Department and which never got paid for and nor were they returnable after engraving and stenciling. Not everyone has the personal ethics or the common sense that they should have because daddy will cover their butt. Sad situation all the way around. It will be messy in Superior Court for the Post, the Department, and the community government.

How the heck did they get Federal Homeland Security Grants?? The Explorer programs for the most part are a good deal whether in the fire service or law enforcement. Most federal grants have to have the Ts crossed and the eyes dotted. Hoser

I did not say that they were successful in obtaining any grant. When they did not get what they wanted from their sponsoring Department, they made an application on their own (bypassing their county points of contact) and were rebuffed by the State of NJ. No-one who is a minor can apply for any form of grant or sign any legal contract. The manure began to flow back down the hill to the Department and the town as to WTF was going on. As I've repeatedly stated, the overwhelming majority of these Posts are a very good thing in the community. All you need is a couple of bad apples that hurt the rest of the bushel - and we have several of these embarassments lurking around the halls of justice.

That said, long before I was a certified whacker when I had my old beat up 1988 Mercury Cougar (lovingly dubbed the "deathmobile") I kept a small magnetic cigarette plug amber flasher in my trunk for the times I was sitting on the shoulder waiting for a tow truck or changing a tire or something-- found it back there after I bought the car for a dollar. It certainly made it easy for the tow truck operator to find me, and helped make sure I wasn't killed on the side of the highway. I remember reading there was some state's highway patrol that went to an just an amber rotator for traffic stops and the amount of collisions involving patrol cars on the side of the highway plummeted. I believe it may have been the New York State Police; anyone remember? Anyway, I believe roadside emergencies are the only time members of the general public can use flashing lights, but I've been wrong before.

Man, I miss that POS. Over 230,000 miles on it before it had had enough. But I digress.

well they are illegal i bet you knew that. but most cops will let you get away with certain things. almost all cops dont care what you do to your vehicle, as long as you use it responsibly. but once an awhile you find the one cop out to get the guys with lights

if you were using your lights on like 280 then yea you deserve a ticket.

Only I-80, and the troopers just pass me by. But I just have a blue LED, noithing else. It;s better to save than to spend.
