Radio assignment and use by Fire Explorers (or any other Explorer) is based on what their sponsoring Fire Department decides it will be. This includes the purchase of radios (FRM/GMRS) with their own funds. As an auxiliary unit of that Department, it is the responsibility and authority of the adult officers to make this kind of determination. There was one such Explorer group in NJ that made their own decisions, purchased equipment, made false assumptions about licensing, and ran into operational and legal problems that could have been easily avoided by following the Chief's and Post Committee's direction.

In summary, for both posts, it is the sponsoring Department that makes the decisions and the rules for their Explorers - for their protection against themselves and compliance with law.

Sounds like something Roxbury would do. If they could get away with it they would try to buy guns for them.

There are a number of horror stories that local sponsoring FD's have had to face because of the foolish actions of the teens. The best Explorer Posts have positive and proactive adult control over the activities and a "lid" on the potential for independant, foolish behavior. I've seen these negative patterns emerge, over the years, far too often and the end result is always the same - to the detriment to the Department and to the municipality. Posts can be an excellent community activity for future recruitment but can quickly get out of control without monitoring by the assigned adult leadership.
