Hey Ron...welcome to the hobby & radio reference. THIS page should help you out a little to get you started.

Also, if you have a trunking scanner, you can program the state police trunked system along with the NJSP Marine units talk group ID's.

Thanks for help

I bought a BC246T which has trunking. I don't know how to use it but I guess I'll learn.
Would the best way to check them out be to put them in a search and let the scanner just keep rotating them? Ron

I'm not really familiar with uniden scanners, but I know radio shack scanners have whats called a "service search" which already has marine frequencies (as well as aircraft, ham, FRS, CB etc) which you can scan. I would only assume that uniden also has this feature. Maybe the owners manual will say something about that, or you could always post a question about that in the uniden forum of this website. If not, then yes, you could enter those freq's into your scanner and 'scan' them. Just keep in mind, that its pretty rare to hear anything in the winter (I live on the water in Lanoka Harbor). Also, the marine freq's are not very strong, so , unless you are fairly close by to the ships, the you will not be likely to hear anything.

I know the guys in the Uniden forum are very helpful, and its usually pretty active, so you should get any questions you have answered pretty quick in there.

Where in Jersey are you ?

The link Bentley provided is a good reference point for all of the marine channels and frequencies. Here are some specific channels from that list that you will want to monitor:
(I'll list the channels, and you can program the corresponding frequencies)

Coast Guard (Boats and Helicopters)
Channels 9, 16, 21A, 22A, 23A, 81A, 82A, 83A
Coast Guard Air Frequencies (Not on the list)
345.000 - Primary Ops
237.900 - Secondary Ops
326.150 - Air-Ground Primary Ops
379.050 - Air-Ground Secondary Ops
Coast Guard New York City Repeater (Not on list)
164.9125 PL 103.5 (Sandy Hook Station uses this frequency)
Boats/Ships in New York Harbor & Sandy Hook Bay
Channels 12, 28, 88
Recreational Boaters
Channels 9, 68, 69, 71
Fishing Boats
Channels 63, 65, 68
Ships
Channels 5, 7A, 8, 11, 12
Marine Police & Tow Boats
Channel 17
Marine Police operate Primarly on the State Police Trunk System but they can use Channel 17 if necessary.
Boats use Channel 13 to talk to bridge tenders when asking for a bridge opening.

What exactly do you mean? BTW, your reception will probably depend on your proximity to the water. If you're able to receive the Coast Guard channels, you may only be able to receive the transmissions from the stations. You may not be able to hear the transmissions coming from the boats.

Newbie

You sent some great info with channels and frequencies from Bentley and the right channels to put in from DJ88. Just wondered if you guys had anything like the Marine stuff for the Air band?
Years ago I use to get the fishing boats but don't know If it possible in this house. My other house near here got them great. Maybe it was skip? Just learning and your helping fine. Thanks Ron

I listed the four Coast Guard air frequencies above in my post. Those are the ones they use. I guess they could be considered marine air, as I don't think there any actual marine air frequencies.

Frequencies

Some of the frequencies say example 88 but it shows only 88a on the list I guess thats the same. Others were 63, 65 and 5. They seem to have an a after each number.
I was saying are there any air frequencies available but I guess I have to look close by. Thanks Ron

On an old list I have, it lists both, for example, 63 and 63A. The A doesn't stand for "Air". The differenmce between the two is that 63 has different transmit and receive frequencies; 63 - Transmit - 156.175, Receive - 160.625. With 63A, boith transmit and receive are 156.175. The same applies to all of the other channels with an A after them. Without going into a lot of detail, let's just say that the ones on the list that Bentley provided are the ones you will want to monitor.

Just a side note, unlike repeaters where you can, jiust monitor the output frequency and hear everything, the marine frequencies with the "A" are DUPLEX meaning you have to- listen to BOTH frequencies to hear both sides of the conversation.
