I've just purchased a GRE PSR500 and have utilized Radio Reference and WIN500 to do most of the trunking programming. I've tweaked a few systems where channels/capacity have been added {e.g. West Orange}.

I'm utilizing the supplied rubber antenna in my travels and found some anomalies that perhaps longer duration listeners can clear up. Yesterday morning Union Twp had a working fire. I had the Union trunking system scanning, I'm in Union on I-78 and not a transmission. It was mutual aid going into Union and cover over 453.150 that tipped me off.

Later on when I was on Wall Street in Manhattan I heard Union TKD 5X5. I live in Somerset County and cannot hear Morris County TKD at all. While driving along I-78 which bisects northern Somerset County from Southern Morris, again not a single transmission. I was this afternoon on I-80 and heard Morris sheriffs chatting so I know the TKD system is programmed correctly.

I cannot hear Edison while in Edison, go figure. I hear East Brunswick in Manhattan but not along I-78 which is atop a mountain, many times with clear views to the south. I can barely hear Piscataway at home or driving. I was picking up PD transmissions in Jersey City on Tuesday and nothing at all the past two days. FDJC's former channel 1 {460.550} is part of the trunked channel lineup according to RR. Today I heard that frequency being used conventionally for FD use.

I can hear NJSP North 5X5 in Manhattan, but I can't hear it at home, despite being 4 miles from the Somerville barracks. I also have the Westchester County NY trunked system programmed and haven't heard a word while in Manhattan, Queens or even this afternoon on the Bergen/Rockland county border {clear shot across Hudson River}. Port Authority PD has decent coverage but the only talkgroups I have enabled now are Aviation and CFR operations at the 3 airports.

Am I naive to think a trunked system covering a county or larger should be receivable well beyond that county's borders? Should I simply have the control channels only programmed or all system channels? Which is better for listening. In Morris County's system, there are 4 sites. I first programmed the system closest to me and had no results. I currently have all Morris channels programmed as a multi-site system. I've checked and double checked all the base, offset and spacing configurations.

Any assistance

Jim

It sounds like your PSR500 is experiencing desense in certain areas where there may be strong signal overload from perhaps cell sites or other strong transmitters. This is a common problem on many of the new portable scanners due to how extremely sensitive they are. Have you tried using the attenuator function when this happens. It may or may not work but worth a try.
