Peculiar activity monitored on NJ UASI UTAC44 and UTAC47 channels.

This past week at various times up until today and continuing I have monitored various key ups of no audio I.e. dead carrier for up to 3 to 5 minutes and a strange audio signal which seems to be a some type of system alarm or simply something else. I monitor channels on their stated PLs and these signals come through.

Need to identify, perhaps state radio techs are testing or tuning or it could be nefarious RFI by unknown parties.

Yup. I’ve been hearing open carrier, random key ups, as well as an ear piercing hiss (not like a 1k testing tone from a monitor), mostly hearing it in upper Passaic county. I’ve noticed it most on 44 and 46.

Hearing the same noise and key ups here in NE Bergen County. So bad I had to lockout and avoid those channels. It has been happening in the afternoon and into the early evening almost everyday for the past 2 or 3 weeks. Chuck.

if the remote RX sites are still on copper pairs, likely they got WET - happens regularly (or used to, till they moved to Fiber) up here in Boston on some of our Mutual Aid channels

You are probably hearing the sweet succulent sounds of T1's having issues - especially if multiple channels exhibit the same issue at the same time. Probably leased line/microwave/or other failures of the circuits causing the issue(s) to become apparent to the users. Unless it's been upgraded it was all QUANTAR based with TENSR channel banks which are all T1 circuit based. They make great noises when connectivity goes toes up!

Believe they were trying to use UTAC44 yesterday for the East Rutherford collapse and decided, instead, to use UASI 8 because they were having trouble with the repeater.

What I heard is a bit different. The IC knew a unit did not have NJICS so he opened UTAC 44 for those that did not. As more resources responded in, UASI 7 became response and UASI 8, operations. Functionally they are the same system. The job went well and Union County and responding resources were all on top of their game.

These UTAC repeaters are multi site simulcast. They are supposed to be knocked down when not in use, clearly not the case. The 44 repeater that has tone marker drifting through sounds like it could be a spur. I tried to match it up (with another repeater) with no luck. Input is clear by me. This will be a tough one. Maybe with change in seasons it will drift away.

Just re-listened, it was 8Tac91 Direct they said they were having a problem with and you’re correct it seems it was because not everyone had it programmed in their radios.
