Your right about analog will be most reliable

I live in Somerset County nj and have a home patrol 1 in my home. My town (Bridgewater) recently moved to P25 and I can't copy half of their transmissions. They go from phase I to phase II every now and then but when they were on 154.115, they were loud and clear. The funny thing about it is the county digital and Bridgewater analog repeaters are not far from each other.

I agree NJDevil. I know that digital Trunked reception really depends on location, especially for non commercial issued radios. From inside a brick building, digital reception from a repeater less than 2 miles away can be terrible. Yet, I can hear Hopatcong on analog SPEN from Union County. That alone just goes to show how much more reliable analog is.

Does anyone have a handle on who are assigned the 2022xxx or 2025xxx IDs?

Neither one conforms to the municipality code (Union Co stops at 2021 which is Winfield) or active police ORI's (NJ0202200 was assigned as Newark State College which is now Kean University but Kean now uses ORI NJ0202400).

I have logged numerous 2022xxx ID's mostly on the County government assigned talkgroups so I figured it was probably spill over if they used up all of the 2000xxx ID's.

Today I logged 2025001 talking on Elizabeth EMS @ 15:23

Down here I can't monitor Union County except for Elizabeth but I wasn't recording.

So you're saying that your ability to hear Hopatcong in Union County is why analog is more reliable than digital ? Interesting....

Yes Signal Zero because IF SPEN were digital, I surely would not hear Hopatcong from my location unless linked repeaters were set up like NJICS. Furthermore, I still hear units in Elizabeth and Linden frequently ask for "repeat transmissions" due to the hollow underwater sound of digital radio.

There are several others who have complained about constant dropped transmissions on phase 2. I am not bashing commercial issued radios (although they are known for sporadic dropped transmissions too), mostly scanners that do a bad job decoding Phase 2. I personally know a few folks in law enforcement and EMS who have admitted that the analog radios were clearer. This is why FDNY went back to analog after attempting digital.

The issue with digital is that it's "all or nothing". With analog you could be in a fringe area with poor reception but still receive enough signal to be able to hear what is being said. With digital you essentially need to be receiving the signal at 100% strength to be able to decode anything. It's the same reason why since the switch to digital TV, it is now much more difficult for most people to pull in a usable signal.

I can hear Morris County's P25 Phase I digital trunked system on the NJ TPKE down to like exit 5 with a XTL mobile and a 1/4 wave UHF antenna.

Ansky you are 100% correct. I remember when I tried using a digital antenna before getting cable and the picture would constantly freeze, but was able to receive stations fine when they were analog.

Signal Zero, that's BS and you know it. I cannot even pick up Morris County P25 from Elizabeth NJ.

It's not BS. I used to drive to Camden (which I think is exit 4) and would hear them all the way down the turnpike to about 5. I actually wrote down the mike marker at one point (have to find my notes) when they started going digital. Again, I'm using an XTL5000 and a 1/4 in a drilled hole on the roof. With a scanner, I would lose them as soon as I got to 78 from 24 and get spotty transmissions around the GSP and 78. You don't realize how well a commercial radio beats the hell out of a scanner until you use one. Same thing with NJSP's 800 analog system. I can pick them up in Orange County, NY up in Monroe/Blooming Grove on an XTS portable. On Rocklands Phase II digital system, Middletown NY on an APX portable.

Oh ok. I misread what type of antenna/radio you were using......thats what happens when I speed-read. I thought you were talking about just a regular scanner

In regards to the Union County system, I can hear both sites: West Orange and UC simulcast with full bars from Middlesex County. I'm also in one of the highest elevations in the county so maybe that's the case but all with stock antenna, 536HP.
