I am having a problem getting the Talk Groups to work properly and could use some help from the experts. Here is the situation:

The scanner is a RS PRO-2096. I am using WIN96, V01.48

I copied into the active template the NJSP file from the original Virtual Scanner files that were supplied with the radio. Wanting to ensure I had the latest version I also tried the same file from the Starrsoft website. I did not see any differences in the files.

I also added the control frequencies that are shown on the RR database that do not appear in the original Virtual Scanner file.

Let’s use the Troop ‘B’ bank as an example. I am able to receive the transmissions, but they don’t seem to ‘track’ to the Talk Group. Almost all dispatch and follow-up transmissions appear on Talk Group B2-16 (400-10). I hear traffic from 2Comm, 3Comm, 4Comm, 5Comm all on the single Talk Group. I would expect to hear selective transmissions on Talk Groups B2-02 through B2-05 based on their respective areas. I have heard nothing on these Talk Groups. I hoped to be able to monitor traffic from selective areas (barracks) based on the Talk Groups that are enabled. That is what I cannot seem to make work.

I have no interest in monitoring the Maintenance, Marine, GSP, Corrections or Radio Repair and have locked out those Talk Groups. That seems to work OK.

It is interesting to note that B2-16 is not included in the Radioreference.com database. Is this a clue?

I am enclosing the bank information for my Troop B settings as a zipped attachment. Both the .P96 and .CSV versions are included.

May I ask that some of you experts take a look and hopefully see where I am going astray. It’s probably just some Newbie setting error, but I can’t seem to find it.

Many thanks!
Daedalus

PS: Please let me know if I should have posted this somewhere other than this forum.. Tnx

Hi Daedalus, this is a perfectly fine place to ask your question.

The file you uploaded has the system configured as Type 1. In reality it should be set up as Type 2; once upon a time the state's systems were Type 1, then hybrids, but they are Type 2 now.

In Win96, on the right side, you see the list of talkgroups in the selected ID List. Above it are the Fleet Map codes. Change all these codes to S00, and you'll see the hyphen disappear from the TGID codes below.

You have just changed the system programming over to Type 2; briefly scan in "Open" mode to ensure all is working properly. If it is, you should go back and reprogram the updated Type 2 TGIDs (see the database on this site) into the memory, so that you see the correct text tags and are able to use the ID lists.

FYI, you have programmed in most or all of the Troop B frequencies. This won't really hurt anything, but it is only necessary to program in the four frequencies marked in red for the Pro-96/2096 to properly trunk the system. If you wish to program them all in, I'd suggest you put the four control channel frequencies in first (before the others) because it will slightly increase your scanning speed.

Good luck,

Jim

Fantastic! Thank you very much, Jim. I'll change to Type 2 today.

Thanks very much for your expert and quick help.
