Hi all,

While the northern police repeater for NJT Rail Operations is on 160.830MHz does anybody have an idea what channel 2 may be?

Warren: NJ Transit PD channel 2 is 161.190 (PL 97.4) which is also the primary for the "River Line"
Channel 3 is 161.370 (PL 146.2) with primary user down south on Atlantic City. There are also some specific talk groups on the NJ Transit Motorola Trunked System. Check John Buracelli's site for the most up-to-date .pdf file.

Hi Bruce and all,

Pardon my confusion about which "River Line" is which. The one I am familiar with is the reactvated Trenton-Camden light rail while others say it's in northeast NJ (CSX). Some say the police use 161.190 as you do but an FCC database search turns up two repeaters, NYCTA in Queens NY and NJT Rail Operations in Bensalem PA. (?)

OK, but that really doesn't settle the PD channel 2 question. For what it's worth I have been scanning 161.190 for weeks and haven't heard a thing, I'm thinking of deleting it. Bruce, have you actually heard anything on that frequency and if so what? Has anyone?

I monitor it in Medford, NJ all the time, has a lot of traffic, maybe the signal is directional.

I've picked it up in Northern Hunterdon County in the morning going into work. The North Jersey units could also be using this in simplex mode rather than repeated.

Hi again,

A directional signal is possible since the service area is limited to a shortish stretch of rail to the east of the tower but not likely. Northern Hunterdon is mountainous so reception over a wide area is possible from the right locations. East Brunswick hides behind a hilly ridge so signals are likely blocked and you're at a considerable distance from the transmitter. I'm also behind hills and about as far so no wonder we hear nothing. Medford is suitably located and over flat terrain reasonably strong signals are expected.

Now lemme see, "channel 2" is usually simplex on the repeater output or another repeater but normally the dispatcher only receives the repeater input. Railroads use multiple linked sites for obvious reasons be they repeaters or simplex so it can get very complicated at times. I guess because they so very rarely announce a frequency change it's going to take dedicated monitoring and a whole lot of luck to scope this out.

Well, today I rode behind a GP40-P2B and the conductor had his speaker-mic strapped on like a bandolier but the radio was silent most of the time. No, I left mine home, it wasn't a pleasure cruise. (;->)

Since we're on this topic, I have heard NJTPD units on the 800 system refer to a "Statewide" channel on several occasions. They aren't refering to the trunk system either. Anyone have any info on this?

Statewide is F1 160.830 (PL 123.0). F2 is 161.190 (PL 94.7) and F3 is 161.370 (PL 146.2). F2 and F3 are reffered to as "Channel 2" and "Channel 3". I've never heard them called anything else. In order to hear F2 and F3 you have to be closer to the respective repeaters. F3 is listed in the Database as Atlantic City but is is also used at Penn Station in Newark for primary ops there.

I've also heard what sounded like NJTPD on 160.605R (PL 146.2) whcih is licensed as a repeater located near the Secaucus transfer station but I'm not normally down that way enough to verify it it was PD or just NJT operations.

I'll confirm that on the 161.370 repeater. I was scanning the railroad bank of my FT-7800 in Union Twp (on Rt 22) and was wondering why I was getting half-scale repeated signals on that channel.

I'll pay closer attention the next time I'm up to Secaucus for work, and I'll check out that other channel you found.

Nick,

The 10-codes listed above are not New Jersey Transit Police's 10-codes (I have no idea who's they are; a likely story for the internet...be wary of what sources of information are trusted). Once again, as Sybex mentioned above, see page 631 of Edition 7 of Scanner Master's Metro New York / Northern New Jersey Communications Guide. Despite the opinion certain members of this board have of that publication - it remains, in my opinion, a must have on any serious scannist's bookshelf.

Best wishes to all for a happy new year.
