I have had a Larsen 2/70 mobile antenna for years, I reworked-replaced the coax with RG-58, the original coax was a cheap smaller diamater stranded center conductor.

After I solder-rework connectors I check for a short betwween center conductor and sheild with digital VOM that checks for continuity with a audio beep.

The NMO mount checks negative for a short, but I check for continuity from the whip to the center conductor of the coil {base mount} nothing, If I check for continuity from the whip to outer threads that
screw on to the base {ground or sheild} I get continuity.

Why would the whip use {ground or sheild}?

Is this what they refer to as a DC ground.

Is it a 5/8 wave antenna? If so, then that sounds acceptable.

Many of the base coils used by Larson have a matching coil in the plastic base that shows a short to ground when you look at the coax cable. This is normal.

You have made the important check to insure that the coax cable and connections are not shorted or open.
