NMO Thick Mount Work-Around?

I failed to consider that my mounting location (an antenna bracket on a side by side) was thicker than the usual intended surface for an NMO mount until after I'd cut the hole. Because I already purchased this NMO/cable, I'd rather find a work-around than have to buy a thick NMO/cable.

The only options I see are:
  1. Cut a notch into the antenna bracket 90 degrees off from where I want the NMO "ears" to rest when I'm done, use the notch to fit the "ear" through on one side, and then hope the overall thickness of the metal will fit into the NMO--which I suspect it will (easier option)
  2. Shave down the bottom of the bracket so it's thinner where it needs to be (more difficult option)
Any other ideas or suggestions?

This is a different style NMO mount, but you can just do the same thing with the aluminum stock and drill a 3/4" hole in it:
