EDMONTON (CP) - The Crown has decided not to pursue charges stemming from a newspaper's publication of police radio chatter on a drunk-driving stakeout that eventually cost a police chief his job.
Edmonton police announced in March that they were investigating three complaints related to the failed operation at the downtown Overtime bar in November 2004.
One alleged that an Edmonton Sun reporter improperly used information obtained by listening to a police scanner, one alleged that the reporter "tipped off a possible drunk driver," and a third alleged that someone committed a breach of trust by releasing to the Edmonton Journal transcripts or portions of transcripts of police radio communications.
