Sooo why have a scanner if you have the apps And a cell phone ??

Because not all agencies are on the internet. For instance, in Suffolk County, only the 1st, 4th and 7th are streaming. So if I lived in the 6th or the 5th, I couldn't use the app or I'd have to listen to ALL precincts.

And only police, fire and ems are streamed so if I listen to other things I'm out of luck.

There is a program I've been using for a number of years, and while it relies on hobbyists supplying the feeds, and there is not always coverage for your area, I've found it most useful. There is an older review of it <<HERE>> that may interest you.

Some of the things I really like is it's integration with Android Auto that lets me control it through the touchscreen in my car. For home use I've been using an old retired smartphone with WiFi access to my home network. It can also be configured to give you notice of major happenings anywhere in the country, usually BEFORE you hear about things on the news.

So if you are just getting into scanning, have no scanner, no antenna, or no money to even buy one, it's a really inexpensive way to "try on the hobby". I've considered making a YouTube video on this amazing little program, if that interests you let me know.

I have been using this scanner app for years. It has to be more than 6 years. I bought the ad free a few years ago for like $3. I reinstalled it on another phone and noticed it's now subscription based. Thankfully I'm grandfathered in so I just have to restore my purchase on any new device. I also like the interface of this app. I remember downloading a bunch of different once and I liked this one the best.

I also just subbed to Broadcastify but mostly for the archives. I just wish they opened in the app and I could ff or rw in time increments instead of just sliding the scrub bar.

Did you buy the sds100? I know that costs $600.
I have a Pro 651 which doesn't do P25p2 so..... I'm gonna be SOL soon and I do NOT want to spend $600 on a scanner. I've never spent more than $250. Besides.. I do like programming them, albeit downloading frequencies from RR.

Well, a scanner can give you access to everything your heart desires locally. The APPS are reliant on what other people decide to share with the community... and there may not be any local feeds for your area. The APPS EXCEL in letting you listen to activity all over the country/world... something a locally based scanner will not give you. Apples/Oranges. ;)

If you want to hear all your feeds and have a premium broadcastify sub, you can use a dashboard.

You can have up to six feeds on a a dash board all playing at once. If you hear some interesting chatter, mute all others.

I think a lot of people that don't understand the concept of radio feeds tend to forget that they have no control over what is being scanned, they can't hold on interesting traffic, and are at the mercy of the feed provider. With a scanner, obviously you don't have such "problems" and you are only restricted by your location and how good of an antenna you are using.

That is an EXCELLENT feature. I currently only have three on my dashboard...
