If you decide to go the route of the serial to usb adapter, just make sure it's compatible with your operating system. I went through hell trying to get one to work with Win 8 when it wasn't compatible. Returned that and bought another that was compatible, plugged it in, and it worked immediately. I also decided to make use of the serial port on the rear because I really didn't care for the front-mounted data cable, and I prefer to keep it connected permanently. I use a null modem cable from the rear port to the serial/usb cable and it works fine.
