I tried the Uniden antenna on my VNA, and it sucks on pretty much every band. Don't have a Whistler antenna for comparison.

Thanks for the info Jon. That's pretty much what I expected. I don't understand why they do this, it doesn't help them sell scanners. Even more puzzling neither Uniden or up until recently Whistler, haven't sold better antennas as an accessory. So the reason hasn't been to try and up-sell you on a better antenna.

His RR name of UPMan do not appear in the name box when doing searches but his posts still exists but are harder to find now without being able to filter on the user name
Nope, still there. Hit search, type UPman in the lower box to search by member, and they show up.

For example:

My SDS200 is on 24/7 and is connected to a computer UPS. So far, it's working great, zero issues other than the fact it's deaf as a rock on VHF. I have a half dozen old scanners that I use for trains, etc, so it's not a big deal. Kind of sad considering how expensive it was/is.
I have to agree with the others here that my 100 and 200 works great on analog VHF, UHF and aircraft band.

All the suggestions here are good regarding filters, antennas Etc. The filters can be tedious especially on analog frequencies that are not used often.

I leave Global on normal. It is inconvenient that you have to go and adjust analog filters on specific channels through Department settings so you can group your analog VHF selections according to what filters work best on individual groups of VHF frequencies. If you take the time to do it you're going to find your radio is not deaf on VHF.

For example all of my rail frequencies are grouped together under the filter wide normal in the group settings. Filters are individual for each person because of their environment and location so what works for me may not work for you.

If I did not apply IFX to every Aviation frequency I listen to my radios would be deaf on Aviation. Instead they work as good as any other radio I have.

I use VHF, UHF, 800 ground planes with lmr400.

Take the time to adjust your filters and you will be very surprised how well the radio works on VHF.

I tried the IFX (round function button + 7) and all I get is 3 rapid beeps. Nothing indicated regarding IFX.

Are you following the instructions in the manual?

In Channel hold mode on a conventional channel, press PUSH/ FUNC then 7 to toggle intermediate frequency exchange on/off for the current channel.

OK Sorry I was doing this on a P25 channel.
Just a note using IFX... it is a universal application, when you take a frequency, even one that is part of a trunked system which you can certainly do... it affects that same frequency no matter where else that frequency is on your radio regardless of favorites list or being embedded in a trunked system. IFX is applied to that frequency throughout.

OK but what I meant to say was even when I do press "FUNC and 7" the scanner beeps 3 rapid beeps and does nothing....it's like I am pressing a non functional keypress and the 3 rapid beeps are an error code beep.

Are you holding on a coventional channel before you try IFX?

To do it on a frequency that is part of a trunked system you would need to go into that system to the frequencies in that system and apply IFX to one of the frequencies that make up the system if you try to do it to a talk group it won't work. It's rare that you're going to put ifx on a frequency in a trunked system unless that frequency in the trunk system had ifx applied at some other place on the radio where it is a conventional frequency and you applied ifx, the frequency in the trunk system which is the same will also have it applied.

But you can't just stop on a talk group in a trunked system and apply ifx. If that makes any sense. LOL

Yes that makes sense thank you. It's like a needle in a haystack though! Now I am not sure messing with IFX is going to help me.

You never know, when the 100 first came out there were no filters, they came later in firmware updates but there was IFX. So I had a lot of issues with the radio like a lot of people did. One of the things is I could not pick up NOAA Weather Radio in the 162 megahertz range on VHF.

Four channels come in pretty good in my area of Philly. There was a lot of bleed over and it just didn't work.

I tried IFX on each weather frequency and it was like night and day. They came in perfectly. Same with the aviation frequencies. Night and day.

Just keep it in mind. As far as going into a trunked system to apply IFX to 1 frequency, that's not commonly done but could be.

Hahahahaha Well it's not so much the COST of the radio, to her it would be stupid to spend that much on something like a radio! A few years ago I wanted to buy a guitar synthesiser. It was $700. But I knew I could justify buying it, and I knew she would go along cause we are both musicians, so it was ok. But to buy a RADIO.........thats a whole different story! I think I might wait till the price comes down. If that even happens.

Tell her to sell all her shoes and purses! :giggle:

OK I mis read and thought it was a tweak for simulcast distortion on sds200. So IFX is best used on VHF conventional freqs? I dont use any conventional freqs on my sds200, just a 4 site system P25. I havent even checked out conventional freq reception on this rig yet.
