"The sensual voice..."

Well no wonder, Perfect Paula couldn't pronounce her own name, then Donna came along. Meh, not sexy enough for the male audience she became... Misty Dawn.

Then in San Diego, El Paso and San Juan they have Javier with a jota because they can't pronounce Xavier. Coochie coochie? (;->)

I really don't know what's disgraceful about it. You don't tune in NOAA for personality or good looks like you do for TV weather you tune in to get the weather without the foolishness that often accompanies TV weather though they generally do a good job most of the time. The automation was explained that the info gets out faster than it would take for someone to record it while reading text.

I can hear 2 different transmitters from my home. Phoenix (162.550) uses a male voice. Globe (162.425) uses a female voice.

I won't argue about lazy people because you're right. Technolgy is wonderful but lazy people don't need help from it to apply their sloth like condition.

Because it doesn't free a forecaster up for more important things... Like forecasting.

Er, yes and no. System upgrades over the years have greatly reduced time lag but what you hear in the broadcasts is a text reader. That's why all the goofiness with earlier software you've experienced yourself with them in your PC if you experimented with them. Weather statements and bulletins are still composed by someone at a keyboard (same thing you read on the web site) and until the NWS uses intelligent robots they still will be.

Now the question; will they finally get the forecast right? While I'm still chuckling here's my favorite robot reading the strangest looking text I ever wrote to get the pronunciation right.

There is actually a good reason they do this!
By using a standard voice that is automated, you don't inject any dialect, accent or any other variables into the broadcast. That makes it easier to understand as listeners grow accustomed to the voice. When you are out at sea there is a LOT of background noise, and trying to hear these voices over that noise can be difficult. By using the standardized voice, it makes it a bit easier.

NOAA also doesn't have to worry about who is reading the weather, if they have an accent, dialect, etc, and run into issues with affirmative action and who they hire. As long as they can type in English, it's all good.

It likely allows them to handle many transmitters out of one common site.

I don't think it's lazy. I think it was a good idea.
