NOAA Wx Coverage in Hi-Desert

I have family living in Joshua Tree and would like to get them a NOAA All-Hazards radio (aka: Weather Radio). I'm not easily able to determine if there's coverage in the Joshua Tree/Yucca Valley area on one of the NOAA freqs. Coverage maps from NOAA don't provide enough map detail for me to determine what's what.

Anyone know if there's coverage, and if so, from which transmitter?

Here are the maps of all the radio coverages. You are right, they dont show much.

How about calling the CDF station out there?

When I was in Joshua Tree a few years ago, I was able to get the Victorville and Coachella transmitters. Victorville was the weaker of the two but still readable. It's a tricky area though, since you can lose reception just by being behind the wrong hill. A weather radio might work great in one location and not at all a few hundred yards away.

I was out there for the first time a couple of weeks ago, and had plenty of radios with me. I never even thought about hitting the Wx button on any of them. It's hard to think about severe weather when it's nearly 100F.

I think I'll just have to wait until I make another trip down there to determine for sure.

Kind of ironic.. both my parents and now possibly my wife's parents live in no NWR coverage areas.

I'll check out a topo and determine where the CDF station is relative to their house. Heck, I guess I could call their local Radio Shack, too!

I searched Yucca Valley, and it came back to the San Diego NWS office......I searched Joshua Tree and it returned Las Vegas NWS
