Hi
Have started to use my SDS200 again after many years. Medical issues

The big knob on the left causes an outburst of noise/static each time I turn it.

How hard is it if I open it up to use one of those potentiometer sprays on it ?

Is it accessible ?

Where would I actually spray ?

Worth the trouble to do it, or just return unit for servicing ?

Suggestions ?

Thanks,
Bob

It may not be a pot that you will find. I could be wrong but a can of the compressed air you mention can’t hurt anything and you always have it for other uses. Just open her up and blow it out being careful not to apply too much pressure on that stuff that doesn’t look like it might handle it. Start out with some distance and give it a shot, check for improvement and repeat if necessary. Baby steps for those who aren’t familiar with cleaning electronic components. There are also cans of “tuner spray” that may contain something like a freon gas. They will freeze whatever you apply it to so again, use sparingly. Start out with the can of compressed air. DO NOT USE AN AIR LINE YOU MIGHT FIND IN AN AUTO SHOP! The pressure is way too high. And of course doing anything I’ve suggested is at your own risk so get opinions from others first. It’s been quite a while since I’ve put my gear on the bench. There may be better advice out there.

The industry standard for cleaning potentiometers is Caig Deoxit R5, its expensive but it will clean and lubricate the part for a long time. Many switch factories use Caig products on their new switch contacts before they ship from the factory.

For this or any cleaner to work you need access to the carbon trace inside the pot. Sometimes they are sealed and sometimes there are holes or cutouts you can get a little spay into. You don't need much.

I believe that is an encoder, not a pot.
