• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

I don't know if anyone else shares this belief, but I think the installation of noise toys in CB radios is beyond dumb and de-legitimizes CB in the eyes of hams and others.

Amongst the dumb of dumb that I remember is guys spending $100 to have the Good, the Bad and the Ugly theme song play for a few seconds at the push of a button. I once owned a Teaberry base that some guy bought and installed a wolf howl in.

Why?!

I got it back and ripped it out.

I just don't get it. To each their own, but that always seemed like a waste of money to me.

There is SO much in CB that offends the delicate nature of hams...
Lack of etiquette
Use of illegal radios
use of illegal amplifiers
Just to name a few....

but i agree with the sentiment -- "noise toys" are really annoying.. echo, key up/key down music -- all are just annoying.

I agree on the noise toys. Just a waste of money IMO and was annoying as hell when someone would constantly key up the noise over and over and over. Back in the day, the only thing I used was echo and it was set as a slow 2 echo. No slapback or echo that would last forever.

I have no qualms with a light bit of echo. It can be pleasant when it's set in the sweet spot. But if it's distorting your speech, it's useless and annoying

Regardless of which radio service we're in, there's always going to be someone that wants to go above & beyond by doing a bit extra. Some ideas are good, others silly--all depending on the preferences of the individual op.

Isn't it nice to live in a free country where we can "hotrod" our CB to annoy others? Yes, I miss some of these "special effects." Looping transmissions is another wonderful phenomenon as well. I recall hearing something about "pretty red panties" when riding through Oklahoma. Dale Watson, the vintage-country musician even wrote a song about it.
