Noob Question about the pro-433

I’m a noob to the scanning world. The wife loves to listen to the local sheriffs dept.
I got the pro-433 because we can’t listen to the city police. We have an old Radio shack Pro-2009. No 800 MHz for us until the Pro-433 comes in. But the question. As I look at the manual it has a pc programming guide. OK? What is that for? I do understand that a special cable is needed. What interface is this cable? USB?
What program is needed? I see some reference to a program called win 97 in these forums. But it dose not say for the pro-443. Or am I not reading this right?
Sorry to scanner stupid.
Oh and I live about 40 miles from Wright-Patterson AFB. And 30 miles from Columbus Ohio. The state capital.

I use the 20-047 USB cable from Radio Shack and for software to program I use the ARC 433 found here http://www.butelsoftware.com/. I use both on a 433 & 2051 and they work very well.
