I recently returned from a vacation on Virginia Beach. While down there I caught some unusual traffic on the VHF marine freqs for the port.....(not what I hear around Cape Cod !!!).. One unit was Black Bird 18 and the other was Rusty Nail. On the VHF they would make initial contact and then heard comms to the effect...go to 34.85 and then later go to 38.875 and one was referenced to CH-3 ??? I went right to "low band" 34 and 38 MHz freqs and heard nothing. Are these HF freqs or was I just not able to get them on the low band. At tghe same time there was a submarine entering the port and some hoover craft training just at the end of Pacific Ave towards the harbor entrance. Any ideas???

Well, it's quite possible that they were referencing the frequencies 134.85 and 138.875. I know when commercial pilots talk to Washington Center they like to shorten things up a bit. When they read back the frequency change sometimes they drop the first digit, so instead of reading back that they are switching to 118.75, the'll just say 1875 instead. 138.875 is one of many tactical frequncies for a couple fighter wings in the Mid-Atlantic. As for 134.85, your guess is as good as mine. The frequencies could have also been 234.85 and 238.875, because fighter aircraft like to use UHF a lot too. As for your callsigns, I looked through my Air Force and ANG callsign lists and I couldn't find anything relevant to what you heard. Do you remember what VHF marine frequency you heard this on?
