Does anyone know if you enter the frequencies for the norfolk base as apco p25 or as uhf trunked? I've also been hearing chatter on 406.350 which is digital.

Looks like you should enter it as UHF Trunk with a system type of Motorola Type II. You will also need to put in the offset information listed hear

Custom Frequency Table

Base Spacing Offset
406.0000 12.5 380
851.0125 25.0 0

406.3500 could be skip coming in from Aberdeen Proving Grounds in MD,NAS Pax River MD or Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune in NC.

It could also be from a Navy ship not listed in the database.

Bill,
These are known controls for Norfolk area.
LAFB Hampton VA - 407.36250c, 408.16250a, 408.75000c, 409.35000c - Smartzone Digital
NSC Norfolk VA - 406.40000c, 406.80000c, 410.40000c - Smartnet Analog
NOB Norfolk VA - 406.15000a, 406.72500c - Smartzone Digital
NNav Ship Yard Portsmouth VA - 406.50000a, 408.52500c - Smartzone Digital
USS Kearsarge at NOB - 406.85000c, 407.07500c, 408.12500c, 408.70000c - Smartzone Digital
Unknown NavShip at NOB - 406.55000c - Smartnet Analog

I have several for other unknown navy ships but they go in and out of port so it is difficult to determine. BTW, many of the navy ships use the same frequencies. They are very low powered to prevent interference.

Yup, we get a few of them to visit Boston from time-time.

Also keep an eye on the 380-400 and 454-459 Band for Navy Motorola Activity

Have you run Trunker or WinTrunker to see if that frequency shows as in use by one of the Zones ?

I think all 380 trunk systems are P25 and yes, I do run Trunker and/or Unitrunker for Motorola UHF systems and PRO96COM for P25.

Not all of them in 380 are P25.
We recently had the USS Bataan [4th of July] and they were Analog EDACS

I've noticed some of the Ships do show as different Zones, but then others Nope
One Zone with the same SysID and CT for multiple Ships. :(

The Odd one that caught me last year was the use of 454-458 for Motorola Trunk with Analog and P25 Conventional when off the boat [Shore Patrols]

. Yep, forgot about EDACS. Fact is, many ships are set to MA/Com systems, both ED and P25.

Located in image at pier 7. This is Google Earth taken in Feb of 07. Of course the actual Google was somewhat sooner.

I too have notice this and a user in Rota Spain noticed this a couple of years ago. He's back in the states at this time.

That may be a Beach Guard frequency in that range, however, SP's likely use the same.

My location is about 8 miles as a sober crow flies, but about 26 miles through traffic on the road so rarely get to the base since retiring 30 years ago.

yes alot of the ships do operate on the same frequency. When im standing watch on my ship I hear all kinds of ships operating on the same frequency so it gets frustrating sometimes while your trying to talk to someone on your ship while getting overtalked by someone else ha ha.

The image was in Feb of 07 and the Google was likely some what sooner.

I checked Google yesterday and several vessels are different. Don't know when a new shot will occur.

Most of the ships pull into differnt piers except for the carriers they are pretty much stuck with pier 14 and 15. My ship "BULKELEY" has been on just about every pier ha ha. But most of the DDGs and CGs are on piers 1 through 6.

Your ships namesake is SOME American Hero. Medal of Honer, Navy Cross and and many other awards. He carried Gen MacArthur et al out of the Philippines and later involved in Normandy Invasion 6/6/44

I recall his famous task of severing Cuba's water supply to GTMO in 1964. A Mobile Construction Battalion crew went to a section inside the base, dug to the pipe, cut and welded a cap right on the 23" pipe and filled the hole, all filmed by ABC's TV camera. The CB chief then took the blow torch, faced the direction whence came the pipe, held the torch up in the position of a sword and stated "touche Castro".:>)

Of course, we had a tanker full of water ready to replace the base supply and then rotated tankers to keep it filled as needed. By sometime in 65 the base had a desalination plant running, but a permanent tanker was still in place when I left GTMO the last time in 77. BTW, during the 60's, all dependents and non-essential civilians were evacuated 3 times...two were when Adm Bulkely was ComGtmo.
