OK, a little confused so hopefully someone can explain in very simple terms. Norfolk is switching to a p25 system, similar to the one vabeach recently switched over to, correct? next what is the difference between the new orion system and the p25 system that norfolk is switching over to? are they one in the same and once norfolk is on p25 does that also mean they are on orion system? i also noticed that on orion each city has dispatch channels so does that mean all dispatches are going over orion so i could just monitor orion and hear all norf, ports, vb dispatches without monitoring each city individually ? hope someone can explain in laymans terms whats going on, thanks chris uhrick
i am originally from area live in nj now, but spend summers in vb.

No, ORION is a regionwide interoperability system that's on the 700 mhz band. Norfolk's new system is on 800 mhz band and is separate from ORION,

To answer your first question, the Virginia Beach, Norfolk and ORION systems are all p25 as well as STARS, the statewide vhf trunking system.

Lastly, this is what I need

Thanks for the replies and just to further show my ignorance to monitor norfolk when they switch over here in the near future

i program this Norfolk P25 Trunking System, Norfolk, Virginia - Scanner Frequencies

and to monitor virginia beach currently
i program this Overlay Regional InterOperability Network (ORION) Trunking System, Various, Virginia - Scanner Frequencies

and i am assuming vabeach's type II smartnet is done with at least for fire and ems so i can remove it ?

thanks in advance to whoever answers to let me know i am on the right track !!!! Chris

I don't have one of those fantasmagoric cell phones with oodles of memory to see the pages to the links on your last post, Chris. That's why I'm keeping my website up (I'm in the process updating some old data especially the localites that have switched to new systems). They show nice on my phone.

Yes you're correct, with one clarification. I suppose we'll hear from Webodisk with a clarification on just HOW the VB system is somehow part of the ORION system when I don't see how. I seem to recall a separate license for it. Anyway, he has the VB P25 listed as ORION site 102 (the 856-860 mhz freqs). That's what you need to program. The 700 mhz system is the ORION system.

Oh, yeah..... Yes, you can delete all the public safety talk groups from the analog system.

Virginia Beach chose to use Orions backbone, so they would not have to set up a new system.Orion is using the same towers as the old analog system. The analog system is a back up and still in their radios,

Norfolk will NOT use analog and digital from what I know.

Norfolk is doing away with all the analog and switching everything over to digital. Projected cutover is the end of June but being told realistically more likely sometime in July. They are in the final stages of programming all the radios now.
