Norolk's NOAA radio

As can be seen, I live in Yorktown, across the water from Norfolk. Since right around Christmas, I've noticed a near total loss of reception on the local NOAA weather radio frequency (162.550).

Some days I can get it weakly, others not at all. Missed the alerts on the big snow the day after Christmas, etc. Now with "several" scanners and a dedicated NOAA receiver, one would think at least one would get something. Could barely hear the station when I was on the Southside Friday.

I stopped at my neighborhood Radio Shack yesterday and they told me they'd heard the station the day before, but when we tried it then, we got nothing.

Has anyone else noticed this?

Downtown newport news has S3 reception and a slight high pitched whine in the background.

It's defiantly low signal, and both of you are a greater distance from Wakefield than I, which amplifies your problem.

Wakefield is the NOAA office the 162.550 is transmitted from Norfolk. I was at Naval Base Norfolk this morning and I could hear the station fairly well. By the time I came through the tunnel into Hampton, the signal was gone.

I've reported it to NOAA so maybe they can get it back up to normal.

Actually, the NOAA transmitter is on the WTKR (Channel 3)
tower, located on Nansemond Parkway just south of the Driver section of Suffolk. [/quote]

The repair parts for the transmitter are at AKQ and will be installed Jan 14.

Again, thanks guys. So far NOAA hasn't responded to my report. Even the auto response doesn't indicate the transmitter is having a problem.

Actually I think they made it back on the 12th, but I can hear them again.

My weather alert radio woke me up at 0 dark thirty (around 0130) Friday morning with a tornado watch.
