i would like to know as well
a red colored dye was spotted in the water near the boathouse in bridgeport, and the units were trying to find the source of it to no avail as of tonight, the times herald newpaper covered the story, u may be able to find it on their website, it is believed to have somtin to do with all the construction that is happening on the river down in that immediate area.
The red color in the water was coming from a potassium permanganate chemical feed that PA American Water was running at their intake in the middle of the river. For whatever reason, some of the KMnO4 was not being sucked into the water intake pipe and was then visible in the river itself. The chemical, when dissolved in water, has a red or purple color.
This chemical is used for a variety of purposes in the drinking water treatment field including zebra mussel prevention (they clog intake pipes) and metals sequestration. In this case, PAWC was using the chemical to help remove iron and manganese from the water as it was brought into the treatment plant. There are no zebra mussels in the Schuylkill River.

Last I checked, there were no zebras period in the Schuylkill River.
Zebra mussels aren't very good eating. Each one is only a big as a fingernail. They live in huge colonies which eventually clog intake pipes as more and more mussels are born and become part of the group.
