Keep yours ears up for another possible nuclear test in N.Korea. Communications usually ratchets up a notch when this happens. Lots of EAMs especially on the frequencies of the GHFS such as 11.175 and other STRATCOM frequencies. Don't forget the UHF STRATCOM frequncies of 311.000, 321.000, and 381.300 as you may hear EAM relays from ABNCPs as well.

ABNCPs are Airborne National Command Posts or Boeing 747-200s. Military designator is E-4.

Thank you. I have another question. What are the role differences between a ABNCP and a AWACS? Is the ABNCP a command aircraft and a AWACS is a detection and communications aircraft???

Thanks Again!

Yup, ABNCP is a flying command post and the AWACS as its eyes and ears for airborne threats. JSTARS on the other hand is used for ground threats.

And of course the ultimate Airborne Command Post, the E-4 http://www.globalsecurity.org/wmd/systems/e-4b.htm

I heard over the next few years they will be retiring all four E-4s and replacing it with two C-32s.

Maybe they should give them to FEMA. They could use them for the next Katrina.

They already have a FEMA mission. They can be tasked to that mission whenever there is a disaster if needed. They've been tasked to it ever since 92 or something if I remember correctly. It was an “end of the cold war thing”. I would imagine the follow on platforms will have the same tasking.

In the Peter Sellers movie, "The Mouse That Roared", the intent was to start a war, lose big-time, and then apply for foreign aid (like the Marshal Plan). If DPRK starts a war, the casualty rate will be huge and then they might even have enough to feed the surviving population. They capitulate and Kim Jung Sick (IL)retires to the CIA chateau in the Bahamas, and we rebuild their economic infrastructure.

And we have a very nice Wiki article on the HF Global Communications System here - it's a long URL, so it may wrap....these freqs are often referred to as the 'GHFS' freqs...

Gee thanks Mike, thanks to YOU I just spent the past two days checking out the wiki articles on HF and have been drooling over the Icom R75 and R8500. Boy am I going to get in trouble when the wife sees the AMEX statement - again, all thanks to YOU.

On a serious note, great job on the wiki and the other great contributions you and others have made to this community! I have learned sooo much these past few months since stumbling across this site and this hobby appears to have me hook, line and sinker.

Thanks again,
-David
